ABOUT BASSETT MEDICAL CENTER – INPATIENT PSYCHIATRY UNIT
Located in the community of Cooperstown, N.Y., Bassett Medical Center is one of six hospitals operated by Bassett Healthcare Network. Bassett Medical Center offers inpatient treatment for adults dealing with acute psychiatric disorders. Although the unit may help stabilize individuals struggling with co-occurring substance abuse disorders, the facility primarily treats patients who require psychiatric stabilization. Outpatient treatment, including assessments, psychotherapy, marital counseling, and medication management, is also available through Basset Healthcare Network.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Upon intake, patients undergo an initial psychiatric evaluation and psychosocial assessment, which allows clinicians to form an individualized plan of care. Patients struggling with chemical dependency may be referred to a more appropriate, substance abuse-related treatment facility to continue their treatment. As a hospital-based treatment center, the goal of inpatient programming is to quickly stabilize the patient and refer them to a less-restrictive level of care.
To stabilize the patient, the medical center utilizes a combination of pharmacological intervention and evidence-based therapeutic programming. Along with ongoing medication management and monitoring, the center facilitates individual psychotherapy, group counseling, and family therapy sessions to address contributing factors that may have led to the client’s psychiatric crisis. Patients may also attend various workshops that address coping skills, stress management, basic life skills, and emotional regulation.
Once a patient is stabilized, case managers help patients and their family form a comprehensive discharge plan. Inpatient clients may be encouraged to utilize Bassett Healthcare Network’s outpatient program as a step-down treatment option.

Bassett Medical Center’s 12-bed behavioral health unit offers a clinical, monitored environment for individuals seeking psychiatric stabilization. According to the facility’s website, rooms are equipped with TVs and Wi-Fi, and clients and visitors are permitted to use cell phones. The one alum polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility perfect five-star ratings for its accommodations, meals, and cleanliness.

In addition to providing five-star ratings for the center’s accommodations, the single alum polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing was complimentary of the center’s staff and its approach to treatment. “Staff were good and they were very friendly.interacted group wise or one on one if you needed to talk personally,” they wrote. This respondent also submitted five-star ratings for the center’s connectivity and visitor policy, its discharge planning, and the staff’s level of training and experience. Additionally, they reported feeling “relaxed,” despite the hospital setting.
Jason, the one alum to submit a review on Google, provided a rating of one out of five stars, expressing his disappointment in the hospital’s approach to treatment. He felt that the staff’s use of psychiatric medication was inappropriate. “Most of my fellow patients on psychiatry units agree to take the drugs that their psychiatrists and ‘treatment team’ push on them-so they can go home. It shouldn’t be that way,” he wrote.[1]
