ABOUT UHS NEW HORIZONS ALCOHOL & CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY TREATMENT CENTER

United Health Services (UHS) is a hospital system that operates more than 60 locations throughout southern New York State. UHS Binghamton General Hospital, one of the organization’s locations, runs the UHS New Horizons Alcohol & Chemical Dependency Treatment Center, which offers a variety of outpatient services for individuals struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Programming includes assessment services, 24-hour crisis intervention, standard outpatient care, intensive outpatient care, and continuing care. Specialized services are available for adolescents and individuals who are involved in the criminal justice system.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

All individuals seeking treatment first undergo a comprehensive assessment. Based on evaluation findings, the clinical team provides referrals and recommendations for the most appropriate course of treatment.

New Horizons’ outpatient programming is flexible and can be catered to each client’s needs. Clients receive individual counseling and participate in groups that cover a variety of topics, including relapse prevention, codependency, the criminal justice system, and coping with co-occurring mental health disorders. Education and support are available for clients’ loved ones. The center also provides specialized treatment tracks for adolescents, older adults, and women.

Clients enrolled in the clinic’s intensive outpatient (IOP) program typically attend four three-hour sessions a week, completing treatment in four weeks. Continuing care options, including step-down tracks, aftercare, and individual counseling, are available to program graduates.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to New Horizons’ website, the treatment team includes board-certified addictionologists, physicians, psychologists, nurses, and social workers.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

When asked how likely they were to recommend New Horizons to others, the four alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com provided an average rating of four out of five stars. Respondents were particularly impressed with the staff’s level of training and experience, which they gave 4.25 out of five stars, and the facility’s cleanliness, which received four stars. “Good staff,” one alum commented. Alumni ratings dipped slightly for the center’s counseling options, the program’s holistic offerings, and its family participation, which received ratings of 3.5, three, and 3.6 stars, respectively.

One anonymous alum liked the “variety of options for treatment,” but also felt that the facility’s educational materials and videos were outdated. Another respondent gave the center’s treatment effectiveness five stars, but felt that the program should have been more consistent with its use of the 12-Steps. Despite these minor critiques, surveyed alumni were generally satisfied with the care they received. “Worked for me,” one anonymous alum wrote in a representative review.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The few friends and family members polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing were generally satisfied with the care their loved ones received; each gave the center’s treatment effectiveness either a four- or five-star review. Respondents specifically praised the staff, noting “a lot of one on one interaction” and “a good bunch of staff, that really understand the patients needs.” However, two survey respondents noted the small size of the facility, describing it as “crowded” and “unable to take in a lot of patients.” One loved one was disappointed in the center’s lack of faith-based treatment.

Joan, Google’s one reviewer for this facility, provided a rating of one out of five stars.[1] “Found the center puts so many demands on patients, violating their patient rights,” she wrote. She further characterized the program as “disturbing” and felt that administrators were “so busy running up insurance cost that it has intercepted focus on the patient needs.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

The one former staff member polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing noted that they would recommend the facility, providing five-star ratings for both the medical staff’s level of training and experience, as well as the center’s loyalty to clients. This respondent praised the use of 12-step programming, but felt that counselors were given “minimal” one-on-one time with clients, as they were too busy attending to “case management obligations.”

FINANCING

According to its website, New Horizons accepts most insurance plans and works closely with managed care companies. Some financial assistance is available for qualifying individuals.
