Addiction Recovery Care Association Inc. (ARCA), located in Winston-Salem, N.C., offers residential treatment and medically managed detoxification to adults struggling with substance use and/or. ARCA is a non-profit agency and has been in existence for over 40 years.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
The facility’s treatment program follows the 12 step method. Individuals with psychiatric disorders, medical conditions requiring constant attention, histories of violent or aggressive behavior, and registered sex offenders are not eligible to receive treatment at ARCA. Most clients in the detoxification program remain in treatment for three to five days. The length of the residential treatment program varies, but begins at a minimum of fourteen days.
Clients receiving detoxification services receive medication management and administration as well as 24-hour observation. The detoxification program is available for individuals with dependencies on alcohol, benzodiazepines and other sedatives, heroin, and opioids.
In the residential treatment program, clients receive individual and group therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Music Therapy, and also benefit from community guest lectures.
Families are included in the treatment program through weekly multi-family therapy and family education groups. The facility also has bilingual counselors available for Spanish-speaking clients and offers post-discharge resources such as physicals and aftercare referrals for clients who successfully complete the program.
The treatment team at ARCA includes an Executive Director, Assistant Director, Nurse Manager, Clinical Supervisor, Facilities Manager, Finance Administrator, and Detox Care Coordinator and other support staff. The staff to client ratio is 3:1.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The facility offers 67 beds for adults ages 18 and older. According to the facility website, breakfast is served at 7:30 a.m. and clients are expected to be in their rooms for bedtime by 11:00 p.m. Participants in ARCA’s residential program complete “therapeutic chores” as well as homework assignments and recreational activities. Each day ends with a onsite Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Clients at ARCA are not allowed to have visitors, but are able to use the phone during free periods.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
At the time of this writing there have been eight alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com. The reviews were mostly positive, and six of the eight reviewers said they would recommend ARCA to friends or family members seeking treatment. The anonymous clients gave the facility an average of 4.3 out of five stars for staff experience, 4.1 stars for cleanliness, 3.7 stars for family participation, and 3.7 stars for counseling options. The facility received an average of 2 stars out of five for holistic offerings, 2.6 stars for exercise and leisure, and 4.7 stars for affordability. When asked about strengths of the facility, many alumni commented that the staff and counselors are knowledgeable and seemed to truly care about clients.
One alum said a strength was that ARCA was helpful to uninsured clients. When asked to comment on facility weaknesses, two alumni felt that the facility could improve the staff to client ratio. Another alum said they believed the program is too short, and one said the facility is “older” and “not fancy.” Another reviewer added additional commentary, saying, “I was terrified at first but the first night the nurses were super sweet and checked on me a lot…It’s take a couple days to get used to but it was a good place to start recovery.”

Overall they gave the facility average ratings, with three of the seven reviewers saying they would recommend ARCA to others. The anonymous loved ones gave the facility an average of 4 out of five stars for staff experience, 4 stars for cleanliness, 3.4 stars for family participation, and 4 stars for counseling options. The facility received an average of 3.5 stars out of five for holistic offerings, 3.6 stars for exercise and leisure, and 4.4 stars for affordability.
One loved one of a client felt that a strength of the facility was that they provide counseling for family members as well as clients. She said the facility could improve upon the number of classes and activities offered, saying clients have too much free time. Another reviewer said the facility is “old and dated.” Several loved ones commented that they felt the program should be longer, with one reviewer saying, “They do not keep the patient long enough…To many patients leave before they are any close to being off the drugs of choice to be successful.”
The cost of treatment at ARCA is $8,350 for a five day detox and a fourteen day residential stay. The facility accepts insurance, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Aetna, United Health, and Med Cost. Financial assistance is available through state and local programs.
