ABOUT CAROLINAS HEALTHCARE SYSTEM – FIRST STEP
Carolinas Healthcare System’s substance abuse treatment center, First Step, in Monroe, N.C., offers inpatient and outpatient treatment. Medical detoxification is available on-site at First Step. Treatment programs for children and adults is available.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Treatment is individualized and emphasizes 12-Step programming, education, and the importance of support networks. Clients will begin treatment with detoxification, if needed, before continuing into residential or intensive outpatient programs. Employees collaborate with clients to help them understand their addiction. Dual-diagnosis treatment is offered as is DWI assessments.
Intensive outpatient programming involves clients in group sessions, relapse prevention, and individual counseling.
Partial hospitalization, outpatient, and inpatient programming is offered for children and teens dealing with behavioral problems.
Aftercare services are available for clients and their families.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
Carolinas HealthCare System employs masters-level mental health professionals and registered nurses that are available 24/7 and work the emergency crisis line.

No information regarding accommodations and related offerings is available on the facility’s website. However, individuals reviewing the facility for Best-rehabs.com gave four- and five-star ratings for the facility. One reviewer noted that the facility “needs improved holistic offerings.”

Alumni responding to a Best-rehabs.com survey gave the facility positive reviews. “Individual counseling was great,” wrote Wendy. “Great place that helped me immensely,” wrote an anonymous individual who felt the food was “good..but not enough.”
However, reviewers on Google were more critical, with eight reviewers giving the facility an average 2.8 out of five stars. Reviewers complained of a lack of professionalism. “It is basically adult daycare with preschool teachings which the state makes you pay for to prove you are rehabilitated,” wrote Tony. The facility responded: “We do our best to ensure everyone receives the best services possible, but we know it isn’t always pleasing to everyone.” Bob, one of three five-star reviewers, wrote: “Fabulous company.
