ABOUT HOPE HAVEN, INC.

Founded in 1976, Hope Haven’s is a substance abuse treatment clinic dedicated to “breaking the cycle of homelessness and addiction forever.” The center, located in Charlotte, N.C., treats 300 men, women, and their children every year. Hope Haven is one of only 73 (18.3 percent) of centers in the state of North Carolina to primarily focus on residential programs and sober living facilities.

Described as “structured residential aftercare,” prospective clients must have completed a substance abuse treatment program within the past year, and be a resident of Mecklenburg County or a graduate of a substance abuse program offered by Cardinal Innovations.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the center’s website, treatment includes the 12-Steps, and clients also participate in regular individual, group, and family counseling. Hope Haven also provides parenting and recovery workshops (where appropriate), vocational and educational sessions, and job training programs.

At the most intensive level, for those new to recovery, there are gender-specific programs lasting three to six months. In these programs, residents must complete a two-week orientation, attend a minimum of four self-help groups a week, attend counseling, complete vocational training if necessary, and, finally, find employment and pay resident fees, volunteer, or attend school.

There’s also an intensive program for families, in which married couples or single parents are placed in apartment units on campus with their children age 14 or younger.

Co-ed extended aftercare services are provided to those with at least six months of sobriety. In this facility, the minimum stay is nine months and the maximum, 18. Residents must be gainfully employed or studying full-time, and must continue to attend self-help meetings and participate in counseling.

An independent living program provides affordable, permanent housing for graduates of Hope Haven.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to its website, Hope Haven employs state and internationally certified substance abuse counselors. All four individuals polled by Best-rehabs.com to date gave the facility five out of five stars for its staff’s level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Most programs are offered from the organization’s campus, the Villages of Hope Haven, in the center of North Charlotte, which also houses a commercial laundry business and a catering company. Off-campus, there is permanent housing for men and women and a residential facility for men.

In the first stage of recovery, the men’s home has 60 beds and the women’s has 30 beds. In the extended aftercare program, there’s room for 60 men and women.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

This facility received positive reviews from the two alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com to date. One former client gave the center five out of five stars for its treatment for co-occurring disorders, counseling options, holistic offerings, and when asked if they would recommend Hope Haven.

“The strengths are them being able to get in my head and figuring out how to change my mental stage,” they wrote anonymously.

The other alum gave equally high praise, writing, “It’s just really a awesome program” and giving five-star ratings to counseling options, family participation, staff availability, exercise and leisure options, and the admissions and discharge procedures.

Reviews on secondary sites are mostly positive as well. On Facebook, of the 10 individuals who left reviews to date, nine provided perfect five out of five star reviews, and one person left a one-star rating.

An alum credited the center with saving her life, and another wrote the center was a God send. Yet, one person wrote the center was unprofessional. The center does have the ability to manage these Facebook reviews.

On Google, Hope Haven had four out of five stars at the time of this writing based on nine reviews. “Amazing resources for their residents! Wonderful piece of heaven on earth,” Candy wrote in a representative Google review.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave positive feedback. They both gave the center five out of five stars for its overall effectiveness, family program, counseling options, and when asked whether or not they would recommend Hope Haven.

Both noted that their cousins achieved long-term sobriety after a stay at Hope Haven. “My cousin was drinking and on drugs for 15 or 20 years and when she attended hope heaven she never smoked or drunk again,” one of these two loved ones wrote. When surveyed on center weaknesses, this individual commented, “None in my opinion.”

The other family member, however, did indicate that “the side of town it is on is a weakness.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

Although Best-rehabs.com has yet to receive employee feedback, an average 3.3 out of five stars were awarded by 10 staff members on Glassdoor to date. Stress and too much work, too little pay were both cited as cons. However, a good working environment was repeatedly listed as a pro, and one employee representatively commented, “My positive relationship with my coworkers and clients was inspiring.”

FINANCING

According to Hope Haven’s website, the programs are mainly funded by agency contracts, contributions, and grants; a small proportion comes from residents’ fees and food stamps. HealthGrove indicates that a sliding fee scale may apply and that state insurances other than Medicaid are accepted. All four individuals polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility five out of five stars for its affordability.
