The Counseling Center, Inc. offers a wide range of services to help individuals with substance abuse, mental health, and physical health. At The Counseling Center, Inc., we have licensed chemical counselors dedicated to providing caring and comprehensive treatment that will help you get your life back on track.

Day One Admission Center offers a calm atmosphere with friendly staff to help you start your recovery process. We will spend the first day identifying your needs and enrolling you in a treatment program.


From the center of the small city of Portsmouth on Ohio’s Kentucky border, The Counseling Center, Inc. offers a crisis center, outpatient care for men and women, a maternal addiction program, and transitional living facilities. The organization supports individuals struggling with problematic substance use as well as co-occurring mental health disorders and physical health problems.


For those in crisis, The Counseling Center offers a 24-hour helpline and a crisis center that can support those struggling with an acute psychiatric and/or addiction emergency.

For longer-term treatment, The Counseling Center uses the 12-Steps and aims to treat the whole person: their physical, emotional, and spiritual health. The gender-separate outpatient addiction treatment tracks offer individual, group, and family counseling; case management services; transportation; occupational and vocational support; and primary health care.

The Stepping Stones program offers outpatient treatment, supportive housing, and aftercare to chemically dependent pregnant women and mothers with children under the age of 12. Clients may bring their children to treatment with them; in addition to the treatment modalities listed above, they receive prenatal care and education and assistance after birth. The program includes medically assisted opioid-detox services.

Additional services available at the Counseling Center include GED preparation, adult literacy classes, a jail diversion program, and prevention and outreach services.


Staff includes licensed chemical dependency and mental health counselors. In addition, pregnant and parenting mothers are connected to a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist. The Counseling Center operates four transitional living facilities, which provide 24/7 support, transport, and individual attention. Childcare is provided on-site, for mothers in the Stepping Stones program. The single alum polled by to date gave the facility five stars for its cleanliness, accommodations, and meals/nutrition.


The single alum polled by to date would strongly recommend treatment at The Counseling Center. “The Counseling Center has been a huge part of my recovery and was there for me when nobody else was and further more they never gave up on me,” B.W. wrote, praising the center’s staff and giving the organization three stars for its exercise and leisure offerings and four or five stars in all of the remaining treatment metrics. Five-star ratings were awarded to the center’s treatment effectiveness and ability to treat co-occurring disorders.

Secondary sites also yielded mostly positive coverage at the time of this writing: three five-star ratings on Google and a 4.2-star average rating based on 105 reviews on Facebook, where the facility can manage its own page.[1] [2] The two pieces of negative commentary both cited unfair treatment from staff: “They need to be fare with each person there they shouldn’t judge a person for what some one else did just because they assumed somthing,” K.L. wrote on Facebook in a representative review. However, the majority of the reviews were very positive, repeatedly describing the facility as life-changing or life-saving. “Truly a life changing experience! The staff loves what they do and it was the most helpful treatment experience I’ve ever encountered. They taught me the tools I needed to apply to my life,” S.M. wrote in a representative review on Facebook.


Staff posting on secondary sites had left mixed-to-positive reviews of The Counseling Center at the time of this writing: the organization had 3.9 stars based on 10 reviews on and 3.25 stars based on four reviews on Glassdoor.[3] [4] The reviewers repeatedly praised the company’s ethos and displayed true commitment to clients: “Very great place to work. Nice co-workers, and friendly environment. Hardest part if the job is when you watch clients not get it, and they have to come back through the program,” one reviewer wrote in a representative review on The complaints generally cited matters unlikely to affect client care, such as low pay.
