ABOUT GATEWAY COUNSELING CENTER
Located near Laurens County Memorial Hospital, 45 miles southeast of Greenville in rural South Carolina, Gateway Counseling Center (GCC) is one of 93 (81.6 percent) outpatient centers in the state. Services at this facility are for adults, as well as adolescents ages 11 and older – making this one of the just 49 (43 percent) centers in the state with programming for this age group – who are struggling with problematic substance use or problem gambling. A parent or guardian’s permission to attend treatment is required for clients ages 11 to 16.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Treatment begins with an initial screening, which is followed by a two-hour assessment. GCC aims to offer a holistic, family-centered approach. Each client follows an individualized plan that’s based on their particular strengths, needs, and preferences.
For the general population, the center’s offerings consist of an intensive outpatient program (IOP), general outpatient care, and prevention services. Details of the IOP are not provided, but general outpatient clients meet once or twice a week, for sessions ranging between two and three hours in length. Treatment is carried out in a group setting.
Adolescent programming follows a similar track, though one-on-one sessions every few weeks are incorporated, and there is a heavy emphasis on family involvement. Gateway also liaises with other local and state institutions to ensure that each client gets the best care possible.
