ABOUT PALMETTO HEALTH RICHLAND

Palmetto Health Richland, one of six hospitals operated by South Carolina’s Palmetto Health, provides short-term, inpatient stabilization services and outpatient programs for adults and adolescents struggling with mental and behavioral health concerns, including substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Medical detoxification is also available to individuals who are experiencing withdrawal.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, each client receives an initial biopsychosocial assessment, and individuals requiring stabilization or detoxification are referred to the hospital’s inpatient program. The goal of the inpatient program, which typically lasts between three and five days, is to safely stabilize the individual so that they may transition to the hospital’s Addiction Recovery Center, which offers intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), aftercare for program graduates, and a support group for licensed professionals.

Addiction Recovery Center’s programming uses a biopsychosocial model of addiction and draws from 12-step principles. Primarily conducted in group settings, therapy sessions utilize cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy. Clients are educated on the neurobiology of addiction and learn relapse prevention skills. Sessions are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Individual counseling is provided as needed.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Palmetto Health Richland’s behavioral health staff includes physicians, nurses, psychiatrists, certified addiction counselors, substance abuse and mental health counselors, and licensed social workers.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Two of the three alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing indicated that they would recommend the facility to others. F.S. characterized Palmetto Health Richland as a no-frills treatment center that provided effective treatment. “It did not have pools and spas like you see on TV, but it keeps you focused on why you are there,” they wrote. Another anonymous alum noted that the cost of treatment was a downfall, but highlighted the facility’s “good therapy” and gave the center’s treatment effectiveness and its counseling options five-star ratings.

The third anonymous alum offered a drastically different perspective, giving the center below-average ratings in most evaluated categories, including the staff’s level of training and experience, the program’s holistic offerings, the center’s treatment for co-occurring disorders, and its counseling options. “Staff unprofessional,” they told Best-rehabs.com.

On CiteHealth, seven reviewers – a mix of alumni and loved ones – submitted an average rating of only 1.86 out of five stars. Most reviewers’ complaints concerned the facility’s staff, who were described as disrespectful and manipulative. “This place is not a place to get better, but to be treated like an inmate. It was a nightmare and I would never suggest this place to any person! The psych. Had not spoken to any of my other doctors and would not listen to anything I was saying,” one anonymous reviewer wrote.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing submitted three-star ratings in most evaluated categories, including the staff’s level of training and experience, the center’s treatment of co-occurring disorders, and the facility’s level of cleanliness. This respondent provided only two-star ratings in categories including the facility’s counseling options, its holistic offerings, its connectivity/visitor policy, and its family participation.
