Hebron Colony – Grace Home

ABOUT HEBRON COLONY – GRACE HOME

Located in the small, rural town of Vance, S.C., Grace Home offers Christian faith-based, residential treatment for women struggling with substance abuse. The center is one of two facilities owned by Hebron Colony, a recovery ministry in operation since 1947. (A separate facility located in Boone, N.C., serves men struggling with chemical dependency.) Medically-assisted detox is not offered on-site, and neither facility employs any medical or psychiatric professionals.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To be eligible for admission, clients must have already completed the detox process and be physically capable of performing daily chores. Applicants must then mail their admissions paperwork to the facility and submit blood test results for AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Hepatitis C (clients with Hepatitis C may still be accepted).

Once paperwork and testing is complete, clients are expected to “check in” with weekly phone calls to the facility to prove that they are serious are about recovery. According to the center’s website, “These calls are also the fastest way to move up in the waiting list.”

Clients enrolled in Grace Home’s recovery program remain on-site for 10 weeks. The center’s approach to treatment is based on the belief that addiction is a manifestation of sin, and that recovery is dependent upon the client’s ability to engage with Christian values. To obtain and cultivate these values, clients engage in religious services, “thought-provoking” Bible study, one-on-one counseling with pastoral staff, and complete various written assignments.

In addition, residents perform chores on the grounds and may participate in work-therapy tasks that help offset the cost of treatment. Along with core programming, residents also participate in therapeutic recreation and leisure activities.

  • This is a Christian based program. I was skeptical, in fact I had friends from AA tell me because this was not a 12 step program that they were probably going to try to talk me into Jesus instead of AA. I didn't care. I was desperate. Truly my life changed there. Yes, I relapsed when I re-entered the world, but the depth of the faith that was begun while at Grace Home allowed me to be picked back up and then completely healing. 25 years of drinking, battling, struggling- completely taken, gone, lifted, no more. Those 10 weeks were intense and invaluable. It changed my life. This was not a 12 step program, rather spiritual.
