ABOUT GREAT STARTS
In operation since 1948, Helen Ross McNabb Center of Knoxville, Tenn. provides a range of behavioral health treatment and psychiatric services for children and adults struggling with chemical dependency, psychiatric disorders, or co-occurring disorders. A specialized program of the regional treatment provider, Great Starts offers intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment designed for pregnant women and mothers with young children who are recovering from chemical dependency or mental health disorders. Typically utilized as an aftercare service post primary treatment, Great Starts does not provide on-site detoxification services.

Upon admission into the sober living facility, clients may undergo an initial substance abuse and psychiatric assessment to identify specific needs. According to the facility’s website, Great Starts utilizes evidence-based treatment approaches to treat co-occurring disorders.
Treatment details are limited to date. According to the facility’s website, Great Starts’ goal for mothers is to “strengthen the mother-child bond through comprehensive services for mothers and specialized care for their children.” To strengthen this bond, the mother and child may participate in parent–child interaction therapy (PCIT), while children may receive specialized programming to promote social and cognitive development.

Out of five stars, the former resident offered four-star ratings for both the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep, as well as the facility’s exercise opportunities and leisure activities.

The alum awarded four out of five stars for the facility’s counseling options, its ability to treat co-occurring disorders, and the treatment staff’s level of experience and training. Also submitting a four-star rating for the facility’s inclusion of holistic treatments, the alum simply wrote: “Good facility overall.”
Elsewhere online at the time of this writing, three reviewers on Citehealth praised the facility, namely the facility’s staff; however, one reviewer expressed concern that qualified staff members were leaving the facility.[1] Offering a perfect five-star rating for the facility’s quality of care, one anonymous alum wrote: “The staff is absolutely incredible at the Great Starts Nursery but seem to be disappearing…,” while another alum added: “I’m a former client and graduate. This place saved my life…”
