ABOUT JACOA

JACOA (Jackson Area Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency) is a nonprofit organization serving Western Tennessee. Residential treatment, intensive outpatient programming (IOP), and transitional housing are available to adult men and women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Admission to JACOA services begins with a pre-screening intake form available on the agency’s website. Individuals participating in the 28-day residential program receive a physical exam.

Treatment at JACOA approaches addiction as a disease, using the Hazelden Living in Balance curriculum, which involves cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). In addition, clients may participate in dual diagnosis treatment through individual and group therapy. Educational sessions address anger and stress management, coping and life skills development, family dynamics, HIV, and parenting. Residents attend both in-house and off-site 12-step meetings.

Offering a similar curriculum, JACOA’s IOP meets Monday through Thursday evenings, for eight weeks.

Available services also include weekly family group counseling, aftercare groups, drug testing, a monthly Prime for Life DUI course, and standard outpatient prevention-oriented counseling and education.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

JACOA employs a medical doctor, nurses, master’s-level therapists, licensed alcohol and drug addiction counselors (LADAC), a dietitian, and a court liaison.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

This Tennessee addiction rehab agency offers a total of 106 treatment and transitional beds. Gender-separate men’s and women’s residential rehab has space for 41. Longer-term sober housing is offered through Montgomery Hall, Tinker Hill, and Parkview. Information on the facility’s website suggests that accommodations are simple, with residents asked to supply some items such as linens.

At the time of this writing, JACOA’s official Facebook page reports developing plans for an alumni group.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Feedback from former clients for JACOA was overwhelmingly favorable at the time of this writing. Four of the five alumni to submit reviews to Best-rehabs.com complimented the staff and all three polled on the staff’s level of training and experience awarded four out of five stars. Reviewers described staff as particularly attentive and committed to their well-being. Alumni highlighted the program’s success, which included helping them learn about themselves.

Three alumni also complimented the facility’s food, and all awarded meals high ratings. While the three polled agreed that JACOA was clean and well-maintained (with four- and five-star ratings), they were split on exercise and leisure activities and agreed that holistic offerings were lacking (with two- and three-star ratings).

Two of five alumni included written comments in their Google ratings (averaging 4.6 out of five stars) for JACOA. Both reported that the program saved their lives, and one echoed characterizations of staff as helpful and knowledgeable.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Three of four loved ones polled by Best-rehabs.com to date would recommend JACOA to others. Two in particular praised the staff as professional, empathetic, and supportive, awarding four and five stars for training and experience. They also highlighted the dual diagnosis treatment and overall treatment effectiveness with four stars (and one more moderate three-star rating). Split on the quality of family programming, they offered moderate ratings for meals and nutrition and agreed with alumni on the absence of holistic offerings. Two rated affordability three and four stars apiece.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Two staffers followed positive trends in reviewing JACOA. Except for noting a limited number of beds and giving two stars for holistic offerings, the one staff member polled by Best-rehabs.com praised the facility. They concurred with representations of staff as empathetic, which one staff reviewer on Google also noted, reporting that most were in recovery and the full staff was “attentive.”

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, JACOA accepts three major insurance plans and is funded by the Tennessee health department, United Way, and donations. Fees listed include $125 for the full-day DUI class, $100 for an early intervention class, and a $50 admissions fee for residential treatment.

  • My wife went through treatment here. What they don't tell you when call for help is that the facility is located in a very unsafe part of Jackson, Tennessee. I didn't feel good leaving my wife there. They are very disorganized. The staff while caring spends much time in their offices with their coworkers talking and aren't available for the residents. They were unwilling to address my wife's food allergies and don't offer alternative choices for eating. There was no communication between myself and the counselor assigned my wife. I called 17 times and never received a return call. The facility itself is run down and dirty. It looks like it hasn't been updated since the 70's. My wife was miserable while there and the men and women sleep on the same hall. They have no janitorial staff the residents of the program are responsible for cleaning, mopping, and dusting. By God's grace my wife has been sober for 2 years but not until she attended treatment at Cumberland Heights in Nashville. This program did nothing for her but leave us in debt. We were told upon admission she would only be responsible for a small amount upon completion but this was a lie. Someone needs to tell the truth about this place. It is a joke and I'd never recommend this place to anyone.

  • Well trained and compassionate workers with evidence based treatment. Number of beds available was small. I have met with workers and facilities and they show a high level of dedication to rehab and personal experience to help connect and identify with the issue.

  • I turned 44 years old while in treatment and really thought I was too old to change. I had went so far down that I didn't believe change was even possible. I had truly given up on myself and life in genera;. Rehab didn't "give me my life back", it gave me a life I never knew was possible. I learned and continue to learn so much about myself, what makes me tick, what makes me feel good inside and proud of myself. I fell I have a gigantic ego with little to no self-esteem when I got there. In treatment, I "dried" out and were given the tools to learn how to live. How to life a life without alcohol and drugs. A life I can be content with and proud of. I can lift my head up and look folks in the eye today. No, I don't work The Program perfectly, but it's all about progress, not perfection. I have to remain honest and willing to change always. Some days the only thing I feel that I've done right, is not drink or do drugs. I make lots of mistakes but nothing even closely compared to the mistakes I used to make! I do have new life. I am a contributing member of society. I am a good person. God does have a purpose for me (somedays I'm not sure what) I don't always know what to do- but I do know what not to do and life just gets better and better~one day at a time.
