ABOUT HIGHLAND RIDGE HOSPITAL — ACADIA

Set on ten acres of green space to the south of Salt Lake City, Highland Ridge Hospital is a behavioral health and addiction treatment hospital operated by Acadia Healthcare. This Midvale, Utah, facility provides medical detox, inpatient treatment for adults, and intensive outpatient programs for adults and adolescents struggling with substance use and co-occurring disorders. Treatment is trauma-informed and holistic, incorporating evidence-based psychotherapy and experiential modalities. Among the more than 500 Acadia facilities nationwide is a long-term residential treatment center for children and young adults in Butte, Montana.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Initial assessments for treatment at Acadia’s Highland Ridge Hospital are available by medical referral or on a walk-in basis. Both physical and psychosocial evaluations are provided. Clients are typically enrolled in a primary psychiatric or addictive diseases track or the dual diagnosis track.

Inpatient treatment that begins with detoxification takes place in a setting the hospital’s website describes as “serene.” While individualized care is emphasized, all detox plans involve nutritional treatment.

Substance use disorder patients can expect to attend multiple groups each day, including educational sessions and 12-step meetings. In addition to individual psychotherapy and family counseling, patients also participate in such holistic offerings as meditation, yoga, pet therapy, and art therapy.

Patients enrolled in partial hospitalization (PHP), or day programming, meet for up to 30 hours per week and those in intensive outpatient programming (IOP) for up to 12 hours. Both levels of outpatient care are available to address psychiatric and chemical dependency conditions and involve the same modalities as inpatient treatment. The IOP also incorporates random drug screenings.

Aftercare planning begins during treatment, and is a priority in each program.

  • I felt somewhat like one of the cattle being run through the system. Not much one-on-one with a counselor and the group therapy wasn't very organized. Meals were worse than school lunch. Facility is older and nothing spent on decor. Quick to get a bed. Not much offered in terms of therapy or activities. Leisure was spent watching old movies (VHS) in the rec room.

  • Kind and caring staff. Willing to work with patients to make sure they can be admitted and treated in a timely manner. Staff could use more training. The training is adequate for operation but they should have longer training periods to ensure everything runs smoothly and not have any errors. This facility cares about all the patients.

  • The advisors and counselors were great. The facility is not very up to date. It would be nicer if it would have been more modern.

  • This place SAVED MY LIFE! The doctor spent time explaining each medication that I was taking to me and the benefits I would receive by taking them as prescribed.

  • Overall positive results, good staff but understaffed, good food, well structured program, scenic surroundings (Wasatch Mt. Range). However, beds and rooms are small. I'm still clean and sober since Feb. 4, 2008.

  • I entered this place involuntarily. If I had a choice I would never go back again...You were stuck in there...and did not gain anything good from the stay. It only pushed my progress back further. This stay led me to 4 other involuntary commitments to other facilities throughout the next few years. The only way I got out of Highland Ridge was to fake my way out. Acted happy and what not because I was getting dangerously depressed while in there. I would not recommend this place to anyone for any reason, ever....They never helped me with the bill which ended up adding to my problems after getting out. The counseling they provided was completely horrible. Most of the comfort I received while there was from other "inmates". It felt like a prison.

  • This treatment center is the only reason I am sober and alive 6+ years later. Local friends still go to the center, some without similar effects, but I believe the 28 day in-patient has really been an exceptional start to my long term recovery without relapse as of today.
