ABOUT LEWIS GALE CENTER FOR RECOVERY IN SALEM
The LewisGale Center for Recovery, part of LewisGale Medicine Center of Salem, Va., offers intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and aftercare services for individuals struggling with chemical dependency. The facility also provides a specialized addiction treatment for impaired health professionals.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Before beginning treatment, clients participate in a no-cost substance abuse assessment to help determine individual needs and ensure the LewisGale Center for Recovery’s outpatient-based program is an appropriate level of care. If an individual requires detoxification or a more intensive level of care, the client may be referred to an inpatient or partial hospitalization program. Detoxification services and inpatient care are both available through LewisGale Medicine Center’s behavioral health unit.
To treat its clientele, The LewisGale Center for Recovery blends 12-step facilitation with evidence-based treatment methods. To introduce clients to the principles and practices of 12-Step, clients may attend 12-step meetings, study fellowship literature, and attend workshops on “step-work.” An alum polled by Best-rehabs.com also suggested that the facility may utilize medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in some cases.
According to the facility’s website, “treatment involves skill development to maintain ongoing recovery.” To help clients develop skills for relapse prevention, clients may attend educational classes on coping skills, trigger avoidance techniques, and emotional regulation. Group counseling and family therapy may also be incorporated into programming.
IOP meets multiple times per week during the evening, and the program typically lasts between 12 and 16 sessions. To help clients maintain recovery after IOP completion, LewisGale Center for Recovery invites program graduates to attend its Evening Recovery Group, a weekly aftercare group focused on relapse prevention.
In addition to its general IOP program, the LewisGale Center for Recovery offers a specialized program for impaired health professionals. The program is designed to meet the treatment and monitoring requirements set by the Virginia Department of Health Professions for licensure reinstatement and other employer requirements.

Out of five stars, the anonymous alum gave perfect five-star ratings for the facility’s group counseling sessions, the respect shown to clients, and the treatment staff’s level of experience and training. However, the alum felt the facility’s initial diagnosis and subsequent treatment approach was not correct. “I loved the facility but the doctor was so hasty to diagnose and place me on awful medicine,” the alum wrote.

The three loved ones polled by Best-rehabs.com to date generally agreed with the alum’s positive assessment of the facility, specifically its staff. Offering perfect five-star ratings for the facility’s counseling options and the amount of family involvement during treatment, one loved one wrote: “They were very helpful.” Another anonymous loved one gave a four-star rating for the facility’s discharge planning. “Nice people who do their best to help you,” they wrote.
