ABOUT CORNERSTONE OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA – TUSTIN

Cornerstone of Southern California in Tustin, one of three family-owned facilities throughout the state, has served adults and their families through multi-level drug and alcohol rehab programming since 1984. Clients typically begin the 12-step based program with medically supervised detox, after which they may progress through residential care, intensive outpatient (IOP) programming, and then finally, to gender-specific sober living homes.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Seeing addiction as a treatable, but not curable, matter, Cornerstone’s treatment philosophy focuses primarily on relapse prevention. As the facility’s webpage maintains, addiction is “a process that can be identified, interrupted and managed.”

Though Cornerstone fully endorses a residential stay for clientele with a history of addictive issues, those seeking the scheduling flexibility to accommodate their commitments to family, school, and work may enroll into the IOP track, available both mornings and evenings. Deemed “cost effective and time efficient for a quick return to work,” Cornerstone’s Short Term Outpatient Program (S.T.O.P.) is often the recommended route for employees who’ve displayed issues of substance abuse while at the workplace.

Treatment plans, tailored specifically to each client’s needs, include individual counseling, therapeutic groups, lectures, written assignments, and family programming. Throughout its different programs, Cornerstone makes use of a variety of treatment modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), drama and music, amongst other holistic therapies, as well as anti-craving medications such as naltrexone and buprenorphine. Aftercare services is available at no additional charge.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Cornerstone employs over 70 staff members, many of whom hold advanced degrees and certifications. Guided by a clinical director board-certified in addiction medicine, the treatment staff includes certified addiction specialists, therapists, case managers, and sober living home managers. When necessary, clients can also work with an alternative sentencing manager.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility’s webpage depicts a home-like residence, complete with furnished bedrooms and a large, fully-equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and microwave. Each gender-specific sober living home can host up to six clients at a time, two per room, as well as one live-in manager.

Cornerstone also contracts with a certified yoga instructor, a music therapist, and a Gold’s Gym, providing clients with access to fitness equipment, group exercise classes, and an outdoor pool up to four days per week. Trips to the beach, movies, and other seasonal attractions also take place regularly.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

In their Best-rehabs.com surveys, three alumni described the facility as strong in its balanced and personalized programming. Christian, for example, called his recovery a “good overall experience,” adding: “Detox is great, classes and information were very helpful. Got to go work out.” Yet Christian also found that the facility was short-staffed and that there was “a lot of wasted time waiting around for transportation to and from meetings groups etc.”

Similarly describing his experience here as “good,” alum Daniel praised Cornerstone’s “ability to cater to each individual’s needs,” while J.P. referred to the established facility’s staff as “real people that know about addictions.” “They have been in business helping people for 30 years!! They are definitely doing it right,” J.P. exclaimed.

Elsewhere online, reviews are more mixed. To date, on Google, five reviewers’ ratings average 2.4 out of five stars. Several alumni referred to the facility as an “Insurance scam” and recommended that others not waste their money. Alfredo added: “They wanted to keep me longer than what the courts demanded.”

More positive overall ratings to date appear on Yelp and Facebook. Forty reviewers awarded 4.4 out of five stars on the facility’s Facebook page, which it can manage, and 53 reviewers on Yelp awarded an average of four out of five stars. Nicoletta gave a perfect rating and told Yelp: “They treat you with respect and help in every way they possibly, they truly care about your overall well-being. You may not understand the rules they have, but they’re in place for a reason.” DeAnne, a Facebook reviewer, similarly wrote: “The counselors are caring and empathetic but also tough.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Best-rehabs.com has not received any reviews from this facility’s affiliated friends or family members.

Yet on Citehealth, where the facility received an overall rating of 4.14 stars out of five from seven reviewers, an anonymous parent raised concern over administrative issues which directly impacted their son’s care: “was in detox off heroin for 2 days, almost died(failed to contact me of this) had someone else’s insurance in there file. Horrible staff communication. Each staff member seems to have a different answer.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

Dave, one of two staff members surveyed by Best-rehabs.com to date, expressed that care at Cornerstone may have declined over the years due to mismanagement and a shift in program design. He didn’t recommend the program but rather revealed the facility in its wider historical context: “it was once a great facility it is financially prospering today off that original reputation that it had built long ago but the reputation is just from a long time ago.”

P.C., a counselor, commended the “high level of privacy and loyalty to patients.”

Cornerstone of Southern California Reviews

The best detox rehab I've ever been to and I've been to quite a few different ones and this one is my favorite nice house nice people and good food.
Cornerstone is a shining example of recovery excellence. In an industry wrought with corruption and often dubious motives, Cornerstone stands as a model 2 emulate. Keep in mind you will have to buy into and adhere to the philosophy of Alcoholics Anonymous. But that's pretty much every Treatment Center in the United States of America. There are many notable & reputable doctors and scholars that don't buy into AA, but you won't hear them mentioned at a US-based treatment facility. In any case if you find yourself on this page best of luck to you or your loved one in sobriety.
After the many conversations I've had with their staff trying to accommodate my loved one into their program, they are EXTREMELY rude and only care about money. They seem so bothered when I ask questions like I'm supposed to know all about rehab or something. Pathetic.Official Facility Response:Your experience was unfortunate and unusual. There is no date provided in your review but hopefully you did get help for your loved one. Insurance benefits have become very difficult to explain to prospective clients. Often it is impossible to check benefits at the time of crisis on weekends and during non-office hours.
Apparently right at this very moment Cornerstone has kicked my daughter off of their property and will not release her personal belongings or information so she can complete her treatment elsewhere. Apparently they have decided that with 5 or so days to go they need to extend her treatment . For what purpose? And now they are holding her things hostage. For a facility that supposedly is focuses on healing and betterment I guess it only depends on how many $$$ are involved.Official Facility Response:20% of all clients are scholar-shipped to some degree if motivated. Clients are asked to leave when they are deemed a danger to the community or severely disruptive and even then we attempt to get the client placed elsewhere in an appropriate program. Personal belongings are made available as soon as possible as are medications once they have been checked by our physicians.
DO NOT send your loved one here. This place is all about money. They aren't professional and and the staff has NO RESPECT.
