ABOUT THE BEACON HOUSE ASSOCIATION OF SAN PEDRO
The Beacon House Association of San Pedro (BHASP) is a provider of long-term residential treatment for men struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The facility caters to adult men 18 and older with a wide range of substance abuse and behavioral health disorders.
Detox services are not provided on-site, but the facility will help clients find a nearby facility for a safe and medically-monitored withdrawal program from alcohol and drugs if needed.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
The Beacon House focuses on creating a highly structured intervention process based on the 12-steps with a focus on peer-to-peer and community support. Clients participate in individual and group counseling sessions combined with community service and work therapy programs. While the facility does accept referrals from the community and facilities, applicants must apply for the program to be considered. Preliminary assessments are made over the phone.
Educational programs regarding a range of different issues that affect sobriety are provided including addiction and substance abuse education, parenting, anger, and community-focused classes. Recreational, vocational, and community focused work programs provide clients with a structured form of physical activity that supports healthy life skills. Sober living services are made available for program graduates as needed to effectively transition clients back into the community.
According to the facility’s program schedule, daily activities include a morning exercise walk, a morning group, and community service, along with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings and recreation time. All clients are required to do chores and help manage the community and household.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
The treatment team includes certified addiction treatment counselors and a registered addiction specialist.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Clients live in a restored two-story house built in 1890, which offers approximately 3,256 square feet of living and office space, and can accommodate 18 residents at a time. The three individuals polled by Best-rehabs.com to date on BHASP’s accommodations and amenities provided mixed ratings, with two five out of five star ratings and a two out of five star rating.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
At the time of this writing, Best-rehabs.com has received one review from an alum of The Beacon House Association of San Pedro. The review was mostly positive. Alum F.H. gave BHASP five out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness, its holistic offerings, its staff’s level of support, its overall quality of counseling, its frequency of group therapy sessions, and its consistency of meetings.
However, the facility received just one star for its flexibility to switch counselors and its attention to individual needs. F.H. wrote: “I had been to many programs in the past, Beacon House is by far the hardest program ever, it’s not for everyone. If you complete it you will never need another.”
On its official Facebook page, which it can manage, the facility earned five out of five stars from 20 out of 21 total reviews to date.[1] Alumni praised the effectiveness of the program and credited the program with their sobriety. In a representative review, alum Adam wrote: “An amazing place, a place I never thought possibly existed, the Beacon House gave me a renewed life, a sense of purpose, and transformed me into the man I am today.”
On Google, the facility received five out of five stars from four reviewers at the time of this writing.[2]
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
The two loved ones surveyed by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility mixed reviews.
One anonymous parent of a former client was impressed with the program, and awarded the facility four out of five stars or higher for its counseling options, its exercise offerings, its pricing, and its cleanliness.Weaknesses, according to this parent, were the facility’s family involvement, with just two stars, and its staff support, with just three stars.
The other anonymous reviewer, whose cousin attended the program, indicated that although The Beacon House had a “very friendly staff” and a “family like environment,” the “organization, professionalism, and quality were lacking.” They gave the facility only three out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness, its family participation, and its cleanliness, and just one star for its counseling options, its treatment of co-occurring disorders, and its staff’s level of training and experience.
FINANCING
According to the facility’s website, no one is turned away for lack of funds. The nonprofit works on a sliding scale for fees and does not accept health insurance.
