ABOUT TEEN CHALLENGE – TALLAHASSEE MEN’S CENTER
Teen Challenge is an international network of faith-based rehabilitation programs founded by the Reverend David Wilkerson in New York in 1958. The various facilities run long-term, residential Christian discipleship programs for individuals struggling with addiction to drugs and alcohol and other life-controlling problems. The Tallahassee Men’s Center, located in a leafy area six miles east of downtown Tallahassee, offers treatment for men only.
Other Teen Challenge centers in Florida include Teen Challenge of Southwest Florida and Teen Challenge: Pensacola Men’s Center.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
The program lasts a year, and aims “to offer life transformation to individuals through Christ-centered programs.” It should be noted that Teen Challenge does not offer medical or clinical treatments for addiction, rather focusing on helping its residents to develop a relationship with God, which the organization holds will help them to maintain a sober lifestyle. The primary modes of treatment are chapel services, group and personal studies, pastoral counseling, and community service opportunities.
Work therapy is also an important component of treatment, with clients working at, for example, an affiliated thrift store and a car detail and care business. These activities are intended to foster a healthy work ethic and give residents work experience.
Though the Tallahassee Men’s Center does not provide further information about its treatment specifics, Teen Challenge centers often divide treatment into three or four phases, granting clients greater privileges and greater duties as they progress through treatment. Privileges might include off-campus visits, while duties usually include acting as leaders for the new residents of the facility.
