The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation has been saving lives and restoring families from substance abuse and addiction for more than 60 years. We offer every patient the best chance of lifelong recovery.

ABOUT HAZELDEN BETTY FORD FOUNDATION – CHICAGO

One of the nationally recognized Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation’s facilities spanning nine states, Hazelden in Chicago provides day treatment and morning and evening intensive outpatient (IOP) sessions for adults and teens. For those lacking a supportive home environment, the established nonprofit also runs a structured sober living facility in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood.

Unlike some Hazelden facilities, the facility in Chicago does not offer detox.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Hazelden in Chicago combines the nonprofit’s commitment to the 12-Steps with evidence-based approaches. Following an initial assessment of alcohol, drugs, and co-occurring mental health disorders, clients may choose the outpatient track best suited to their needs: day treatment, morning IOP, or evening IOP.

Considered the most intense level of care, day treatment runs Monday through Friday, 8:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. With sessions taking place both morning and evening, IOP is an effective step-down option for those transitioning out of inpatient treatment or others experiencing relapse. In both tracks, clients receive personalized plans as well as recommendations for continuing care.

Regardless of their scheduling needs and availability, all clients enrolled in outpatient treatment have additional access to Hazelden in Chicago’s gender-specific structured sober living facility. As residents, they’ll benefit from 24-hour supervision, drug testing, life skills training, easy access to 12-step meetings, and recovery coaching.

Hazelden in Chicago also run “Teen Intervene,” a unique three-session counseling program for at-risk teens. In a one-on-one setting with an assigned counselor, teens come to better understand the impacts of substance abuse and, ultimately, make healthier decisions. For teens in need of more regular treatment, there’s an IOP track that takes place four evenings throughout the week.

At no additional cost, the facility holds weekly support groups for families.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Led by a medical director who is a board-certified psychiatrist, treatment staff include master’s level clinical case managers, licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs), and certified alcohol and drug abuse counselors (CADCs).

Together, the nine Best-rehabs.com survey respondents polled on the matter shared an excellent rating of four stars for the staff’s level of experience and training.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Per the nonprofit’s webpage, the sober living community is housed in a “gracious brownstone” in Chicago. The gender-specific facility has laundry machines on-site and permits smoking in designated areas. The six alumni surveyed by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility’s cleanliness five out of five stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

From the six alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing, an average of 4.5 stars was given when asked if they would recommend this facility. Criticism only came in the form of high treatment costs, noted by two anonymous alumni. Even so, both of these reviewers believed in the benefits of the treatment, one of whom wrote, “but the results are worth it.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Together, they highlighted the amenities, programming, and staff, but considered the location and price to be weaknesses. “Staff is very helpful,” one reviewer wrote. “Group discussions were a strength of the facility,” added another.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Best-rehabs.com has yet to receive any reviews from this facility’s staff.

  • Facility has a long standing reputation for it's outpatient programs. Affiliation with Betty Ford has necessitated alignment with 12-step program. Honestly, many of the principles are archaic. Some qualified caring staff members. VERY expensive, and financial person will under estimate your costs. Expect a HUGE invoice. The key benefit is the support groups - other memeers are the most insightful / helpful.
Don't bring a service dog that's certified as a comfort dog even if you have PSD, I was told to send it home.
