ABOUT CORNERSTONES OF CARE – MARILLAC

Following a recent merger, Marillac, a treatment facility managed and operated by the University of Kansas Hospital, is now part of the Cornerstones of Care health network. The only behavioral health hospital in the Overland Park area, and one of the only three (1.5 percent) in all of the state, the organization’s Marillac Campus offers acute psychiatric care, residential treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP) and outpatient services. Programming is specifically for children and teens affected by mental and behavioral health disorders, a feature of only 75 (37.5 percent) substance abuse facilities in Kansas.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Cornerstones of Care at Marillac offers a wide range of psychiatric and behavioral health services for children and teens. Upon intake, teens and children receive a brief psychiatric assessment and meet with a psychiatrist to determine an appropriate treatment plan. Throughout various levels of care, programs are designed to help kids return to their home and community. As of 2016 in Kansas, 2.67 percent of youth ages 12 to 17 needed but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility for illicit drug use, and 13.63 percent of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 20 in Kansas participated in binge drinking in the past month.

The psychiatric hospital is certified in the Sanctuary Model, a trauma-informed model of care built around the physical, psychological, social, and moral safety of its clients. In residential care, children and teens adhere to structured schedules of individual, family, and group therapy, where they’ll make use of evidence-based practices such as dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Programming emphasizes learning coping skills, regulating emotions, and exercising self-control.

Beyond their time in counseling, children and teens attend expressive therapy and milieu group sessions, also part of the Sanctuary curriculum. Expressive therapies include music, art, recreational, and drama therapy. Where needed, kids may receive ongoing medication management.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Cornerstones of Care – Marillac employs a large, multidisciplinary team of board-certified psychiatrists, child and adolescent therapists, registered nurses, social workers, and youth care specialists. Of the three individuals polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing, one gave staff level of training and experience four out of five stars, and the other two gave this category just two out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the hospital regarding its living arrangements and related offerings; however, the national median number of individuals in a hospital inpatient program at a given time is 13 clients.

The three individuals surveyed by Best-rehabs.com to date provided lukewarm feedback about this facility’s accommodations & amenities, giving three- and five- star ratings to accommodations and to meals, but low, three- and one-star ratings to facility cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

“The only good thing was the food,” the single alum polled Best-rehabs.com to date commented. Submitted anonymously, this dissatisfied former client left only one or two stars for the staff’s level of training and experience, the counseling options, the discharge planning, the holistic therapies, and whether or not treatment was worth the cost.

Reviewers on Google shared all-around much more positive experiences, producing a 4.9-star average rating based on feedback from seven individuals to date.[1] All but one of these users left five out of five stars, and in the only written commentary, R.E. wrote, “I apply my counselors suggestions to my life and with every application I find myself moving forward in an amazing and healthy way!”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones polled by Best-rehabs.com to date provided differing feedback on various aspects of treatment at this facility. One survey respondent provided perfect five-star ratings for the facility’s counseling options and ability to treat co-occurring disorders, as well as four stars for the “Great” staff’s level of training and experience. Despite these ratings, they left just one star for the level of family participation and connectivity policies.

Despite awarding three stars for the level of family participation, the other reviewer was generally “not impressed,” giving only one star for holistic offerings, counseling options, and whether or not treatment was worth the cost. This individual provided two star-ratings for discharge planning: “Easy to leave with no follow up or other services available,” they added critically.

WHAT STAFF SAY

While Best-rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from the hospital’s staff members, 15 individuals to date had overwhelmingly positive opinions as employees here, in which they collectively shared an excellent rating of four out of five stars.[2] “Fast pace and very rewarding,” a former lead staffer wrote. “I love working with children, and my co-workers are incredible people to work with.”

Others felt that the fast-paced environment meant a stressful time at work. “Have to be a strong minded (person), not really a place for an emotional attached person,” a former behavioral health worker explained.

FINANCING

Marillac accepts private insurance and Medicaid (accepted at 148 – about 73.6 percent – substance abuse treatment centers in the state). Financial assistance may also be available for uninsured families. The three individuals polled to date on the center’s affordability provided a four-, a three-, and a one-star rating.
