ABOUT HAZELDEN BETTY FORD FOUNDATION — ST. PAUL

Operating under one of the most respected brand names in the recovery industry, the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation in St. Paul, Minn. is one of 221 (71.8%) substance abuse treatment facilities in the state. It provides a variety of services for both teens and adults facing issues related to substance abuse and addiction. While all services are offered on an outpatient basis, the foundation runs a sober living facility for adults looking for structure and support during the early stages of sobriety. Additionally, this is one of only 15 (1.3%) facilities in the state to to operate an opioid treatment program.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation offers both in-person and phone assessments, the latter of which are available 24/7 and provided at no cost. Depending on the level of care required, clients may opt for intensive outpatient care or day treatment.

Day treatment –– the more intensive option –– employs day-long programming comprised of individual therapy, group counseling, educational lectures, and groups that address special topics. These topics include gender issues, trauma, teen issues, LGBTQ-integrative care, and opioid addiction. The center’s website indicates day treatment is great options for people who have experienced a recent relapse, just gotten out of inpatient treatment, or struggle with co-occurring disorders.

Intensive outpatient treatment is similar in design, but participants meet up to four times a week for three-hour sessions.

Additional offerings include Teen Intervene. In 2010, 5% of Minnesota teens ages 12 to 17 demonstrated a general substance use disorder, and 3% of teens needed but did not receive treatment at a special facility for illicut drug use. This program offered by Hazelden is an early intervention program for adolescents in which sober living is supervised and includes recovery coaching, 12-step meetings, and options for continuing care.

Other alumni praised the center’s program and the detox process. “It’s much more comfortable place than a hospital rehab…more one on one…not totally 12 steps that doesn’t really apply totally to an addict,” an alum wrote. However, not all alumni agreed. “If you need a rigid 12 step program then this place is for you,” one alum wrote. But, the alum noted if “you have the ability to creatively think… then look elsewhere.”

Reviews about the facility’s ability to treat co-occurring disorders were also mixed, with two alumni giving this three out of five stars, two giving this four out of five stars, and one giving this five out of five stars.

On Google, the facility earned an above-average rating of 3.8 stars from 12 users to date, but received much written criticism.[1] Reviewer L.W. remarked that her experience at a different Hazelden location was better than her experience at St. Paul. A few other reviewers noted a lack of staff support. Eight users gave the facility five out of five stars, but did not leave any reasons for these ratings.

  • Availability of help Only teach 12 step program. Very centered on AA and no other type or treatment options The day treatment program is effective if you follow the 12 steps and believe in AA and NA. If you want other options, they cant help you. Its very focused on peer process groups and not as much one on one counseling with clients. Very heavy influence of AA and fellowship. If that doesnt work for you, this place doesnt help.

great staff, they really understand how the patient feels and does all they can to help you adjust and be sucsessful they are quite expensive nice rooms, great meals and an awesome pool, it really helped having the pool to get exercise and a pleasant distraction from the rest of the program. the councelors are great and the large room for speakers makes it feel more like a classroom than a group of people in therapy

  • For a facility with the name, "Hazelden," this rehab was surprisingly a disappointment. It was ineffective in helping my daughter. Here, young men and women live in dorm-like rooms adjacent to each other and then get kicked out each week due to forming relationships. The vast majority of residents are male and the regimented programming is primarily geared to meet men's needs. There are very few vegetarian food options and the meals cater to choices which can mostly be described as meat and potatoes entrees. There is no exercize facility. The worst is that this place is labeled dual diagnosis, yet it was virtually impossible to get a psychiatry appt. for much needed medical management until nearly two months after my daughter's arrival. Some of the recovering techs who monitor and grade the residents' behaviors are helpful, while others demean and unfairly needle the residents and micro-manage them. Our family liked that some therapy groups are very good. Overall, many young people fail here and are asked to leave instead of the counselors adding what they actually need: more recovery support. The director misrepresented various aspects of the program to our family prior to our daughter's arrival: falsely stating there were exercize groups that met weekly, that there was outstanding dual diagnosis support, that men and women had separate living areas, that there was excellent direction given to residents on stepping down in aftercare, etc. Following my daughter's stay at Hazelden Plymouth, the St. Paul facility was a huge and painful disappointment for her. Our family concluded that the St. Paul Hazelden was started by men and that it still is much better for men's recovery. It is a gross mismatch that falls way short of meeting the needs of most dual diagnosed women.

  • Strengths: Private rooms smaller groups. Weaknesses: More leaned toward the alcholics than the addicts they should separate them. It's a much more comfortable place than a hospital rehab...more one on one..not totally 12 step that doesn't really apply totally to an addict. They handled the detox process much better than a hospital setting where your just an insurance payment.

I only needed to get away for a few days, so when the few days were up I was ready to go. Being away from "friends" was what I really needed, not a 12 step program. Medicating the clients was the main form of "treatment", I felt/feel this was not only ineffective but hypocritical. Only abstinence and 12 step, simple solutions for the simple minded. $22,000 for 15 days......the counselors were not qualified and the nurses, doctors, and CMAs were below par. The facilities were pretty nice, but there was only a 12 step traditional approach; no holistic approach at all. ... If you need a rigid 12 step program then this is the place for you!! ...
The photos show a cozy Victorian home where it was assumed the residents resided. The reality was the house was were the offices were. Residents stayed in what looked line a minimum security prison. Totally dismal. We're bringing him home so he can receive therapy and proper nutrition. There was no fitness facility close by or on the premesis. The food was brought in from another facility and it was awful, institutional-type food. There was only 1 therapist on staff for 60 residents and getting an appointment was impossible. At $5800/month, there should have been some type of psychological support, as well as support in all other areas of well-being. ... Unfortunately, maybe because that was an adult facility, it was a poor fit for our son who is 20 years old and pretty immature.
