PORT HEALTH SERVICES – PORT ADOLESCENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAM
Based in Greenville, N.C., PORT Health provides a variety of treatment services for individuals struggling with mental illness, substance abuse, and co-occurring disorders. In addition to treating adults, the nonprofit serves adolescent populations through a treatment continuum that includes prevention services, residential treatment, and outpatient (OP) treatment. The center also operates Project F.I.N.D. (Families Involved in Normal Development), an early intervention tool and alternative to long-term suspension, in partnership with Pitt County Schools.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Adolescents ages 13 to 17½ are eligible for treatment at PORT Health. To help determine the most appropriate course of treatment, staff conduct an initial assessment with the client and their family members. Teens who require 24-hour supervision may be referred to PORT Health’s residential program, which typically runs over the course of 90 days and utilizes the evidence-based Seven Challenges approach to treatment. Residents receive individual, group, and family counseling, and participate in educational activities, life skills and vocational training, adventure therapy, and social development initiatives. Clients also receive 12-step education and are transported to local Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings.
Day treatment offers an outpatient alternative to clients who do not require the intensity of inpatient care. Programming is similar to what’s offered through residential treatment, but clients attend five-hour sessions five days a week.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
According to the organization’s annual report, PORT Health employs physicians, licensed clinicians, counselors, nurses, and support staff.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
According to its website, PORT Health strives to create a family-style environment for its residential clients. Clients who are enrolled in school may continue to earn educational credits while receiving care. When not in school or participating in treatment sessions, residents can play sports, take yoga and group fitness classes, participate in arts and crafts, and attend community outings.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
The one alum polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility’s treatment effectiveness a rating of five out to five stars. The same alum gave the center’s accommodations three stars, and its meals and nutrition four stars.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
Mary, the one loved one polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing, gave the center’s accommodations and cleanliness above-average ratings, but expressed disappointment with her loved one’s overall care. Mary gave the program’s treatment effectiveness a one-star rating and noted that she would not recommend the program to others, as staff did not facilitate adequate communication regarding her loved one’s treatment. “They directly lied to guardians about care that would be provided,” she wrote.
FINANCING
PORT Health offers self-pay options and works with Medicaid, Medicare, and some private insurance providers, including Aetna, Cigna, and Magellan. The facility’s website indicates that staff will help uninsured clients access financial aid.
