ABOUT TMC BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTER
Located in Sherman, Texas, TMC Behavioral Health Center provides inpatient and outpatient treatment services for adults struggling with substance abuse, mental health, and co-occurring disorders. It also offers an Adolescent Recovery Program for youth ages 13 through 17. The facility is among nine percent of treatment centers throughout the state to offer non-hospital, residential medically-managed detoxification.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
All incoming clients meet with a licensed mental health professional for an evaluation, as well as a psychiatrist for a consultation. The treatment team then reviews the results to create a personalized treatment plan.
There are several inpatient programs. Dual Diagnosis and Chemical Dependency is designed for clients with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders, including alcoholism and depression, opioid dependence and anxiety disorder, and marijuana addiction and bipolar disorder.
The Adult Inpatient Psychiatric unit provides clients with an intensive, therapeutic structure that includes 24-hour nursing care, psychiatric and crisis stabilization, customized treatment, and discharge planning. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is available for clients with severe depression.
The Adolescent Recovery Program treats chemical dependency and dual diagnosis and includes an on-site education curriculum, as well as individual, group, and family therapy, and aftercare planning.
The Dual Diagnosis program provides acute detoxification care for clients who require it. The 24-hour, medically-managed program seeks to stabilize clients as well as assess and address their needs. Comprehensive inpatient treatment combines 12-step-based recovery methods with attentive psychiatric and medication management.
An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is also offered for adults who do not need residential care or are “stepping-down” from inpatient treatment. Sessions run three days per week and include group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), relapse prevention, and workshops on life skills, coping skills, and relaxation skills.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
The TMC treatment team includes specially trained physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, licensed counselors and master’s level social workers, recreational therapist, and mental health technicians.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The 60-bed facility prohibits smoking anywhere on campus. Clients participating in the IOP, which meets from 8:45 to noon three days per week, receive lunch.

They assigned the major categories of the survey neutral and favorable ratings – three stars out of five for treatment effectiveness and four stars each to accommodations and meals. Although they pointed out that arts and crafts keeps clients engaged, they also cited weaknesses of the program, including keeping the residents only “for a very short time” and then switching “them to out patient care.”
On secondary review sites, TMC Behavioral Health received mixed feedback: 3.7 out of five stars based on 10 reviews on Google and 3.2 out of five stars based on 10 reviews on Facebook, which the organization can manage.
Some (alumni and loved ones) praised the doctors and staff, the care received, and results achieved.
Negative comments concerned lack of medication control, improper medication, and misinformation. Whereas Toni wrote: “If your into strip searches & Being treated like a criminal this is the place for you!,” mom Michelle posted: “I am extremely grateful to all of the staff and the program for helping to restore my son back to normalcy!”
