ABOUT KINNIC FALLS ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE SERVICES INC.
Located in the community of River Falls, Wisc., 35 miles east of Minneapolis, Kinnic Falls Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services provides a long-term residential program for adult males struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring mental health disorders. According to the facility’s website, the program is designed for men who have completed treatment at a primary facility and desire to continue treatment. As such, the facility does not offer medical detoxification services. Along with its residential program, the facility also operates a sober housing facility that’s open to program graduates.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Upon admission to the facility, clients undergo an initial psychosocial assessment, allowing clinicians to individualize treatment and identify any mental health concerns. Kinnic Falls adheres to the addiction as a disease model of treatment, and 12-Step plays a large role in the facility’s programming. During treatment, clients may attend on- and off-site 12-step meetings, study fellowship literature, and perform associated “step-work.”
Along with an immersion into 12-Step, clients also participate in a structured schedule of both individual and group counseling sessions. Counseling sessions are designed to help clients identify underlying contributors to their addiction and assist clients in modifying irrational thinking patterns. Through counseling sessions, clinicians also offer guidance concerning specific issues that may need to be addressed, such as unemployment, homelessness, relationship-building, education, spirituality, and mental health. Dually diagnosed clients may also receive ongoing psychiatric evaluations and medication management to treat diagnosable symptoms.
In addition to core programming, Kinnic Falls allows clients to obtain employment or volunteer within the community while participating in the 90-day residential treatment program. Successful graduates of the residential program may have the option to transition into Kinnic Falls’ sober living facility, which is also located in River Falls. Residents can stay in the aftercare sober housing facility for up to six months.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
Regulated by the Health and Family Services Department of the State of Wisconsin, Kinnic Falls employs a multidisciplinary team of licensed substance abuse counselors and support staff.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The residential facility can house up to 44 men, and residents share simple yet comfortable double-occupancy bedrooms. The facility also features sweeping lawns for recreational activities, TV lounges, libraries, a full-service dining hall, and well-furnished meeting areas. Unique to Kinnic Falls, the facility offers clients a fair amount of freedom compared to similar programs.
For the first seven days, clients may leave the grounds using the “buddy system” with another resident. After seven days, clients may leave the grounds as they wish, though the facility does enforce a 12 a.m. curfew; however, residents are subject to toxicology screenings and must attend all scheduled treatment sessions. Clients may also receive visitors each day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., except during group sessions. In addition, residents may possess personal electronic devices (cell phones, tablets) and have one vehicle on-site.
