ABOUT GENESIS HOUSE
Located in the outskirts Vallejo, Calif., 32 miles north of San Francisco, Genesis House offers a phased, long-term residential treatment program and sober living residences for adult men and struggling with chemical dependency. The facility does not provide detoxification services on-site. According to the facility’s website, the residential program is designed to both treat addiction and promote lasting lifestyle changes. It is one of 485 facilities in the state of California that offers long-term treatment.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Upon admission, residents participate in an initial assessment to identify individual needs. The residential program lasts between nine and 11 months. Following a therapeutic community model of recovery, the residential program is designed to promote personal responsibility and independent living skills in a supportive environment. To help clients obtain and acquire sobriety, Genesis House blends 12-step immersion with evidence-based treatment methods.
During residential treatment, clients attend group and individual counseling sessions with their primary counselor. Genesis House also utilizes role-playing and psychodrama group therapy sessions to promote free expression, increase coping skills, and identify root causes of addiction. In addition to counseling, clients also regularly attend 12-step meetings and perform associated “step-work.” Along with core programming, clients participate in recreational activities, and family members are invited to attend educational and counseling sessions.
Programming is broken up into three distinct, 90-day treatment phases, in which clients gain increased privileges and responsibilities as they progress in recovery. The first phase focuses on the events which led to admission, while the latter phases focus on career guidance and vocational services, readying clients to become self-reliant members of society. Clients may choose to transition into the sober housing facilities, where residents and staff continue to coordinate vocational and educational plans.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
Genesis House’s staff consists of an executive director, a clinical director, a job coordinator, and six counselors who are available 24 hours per day.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Genesis House is described as a self-sufficient community on its website. As a therapeutic community model of recovery, clients are assigned chores, expected to cook for themselves, and maintain living areas. The facility is comprised of four separate, adjacent facilities, all of which resemble multi-family homes. The program has capacity for up to 45 residents. Thirty-one beds are reserved for those in residential treatment, and the sober living facilities offer 14 beds.
