ABOUT METCALF RECOVERY RANCH

Located in the community of Blythe, in the Inland Empire region of Southern California, Metcalf Recovery Ranch provides gender-specific, residential treatment for adult men struggling with chemical dependency. One of the three residential facilities operated by VARP, Inc., a nonprofit treatment organization, Metcalf Recovery Ranch does not provide medication detoxification on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To provide an individualized treatment plan, clients may undergo an initial substance abuse assessment and evaluation upon admission. Metcalf’s client-centered programming is largely based on the principles and philosophies of the 12-step model of recovery. During treatment, residents may attend on- and off-site 12-step meetings, learn to “work the steps,” and study fellowship literature.

Through a therapeutic community model of treatment, programming is designed to equip residents with the coping skills and recovery tools necessary for sustaining sobriety. The typical length of residential treatment lasts between 30 and 90 days, depending on individual client needs.

Along with an immersion into 12-Step, clients also participate in a structured schedule of process groups, recreational activities, relapse prevention classes, and educational book studies. As a gender-specific program for men, counseling sessions may focus on issues common among men struggling with chemical dependency, such as anger management, trauma, emotional regulation, and stress management. Individual counseling is also incorporated into treatment.

Throughout treatment, Metcalf Recovery Ranch provides ongoing discharge planning to assist clients in their transition back into the community. Discharge planning may include referrals to sober housing, vocational training, support networks, and other community-based support services. Metcalf Recovery Ranch may also serve as a client advocate for the court and/or family service agencies to help facilitate the process of family reunification.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Although Best-rehabs.com has yet to receive alumni feedback at the time of this writing, secondary sources revealed generally positive alumni opinions of the facility. On the center’s unofficial Facebook page, eight individuals gave the facility an average rating of 3.8 out of five stars.[1] Satisfied clientele cited the facility’s staff and programming as its strengths. “Great place. I learned so much about myself and how to cope with life on life’s terms.” Mike, a representative reviewer, wrote. Alum Kenneth added: “Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable.”

The few complaints listed on the facility’s Facebook page had to do with in-house rules such as a no-hat policy and “Only drug related books on recovery” as the encouraged reading material.

WHAT STAFF SAY

The sole staff member polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing was moderately critical of the facility. Out of five stars, the staff member gave ratings of four stars for management’s adherence to treatment protocols and five stars for patient privacy. However, the survey respondent gave a two-star rating for management’s willingness to put the interests of clients first. The staff member gave a three-star rating for the overall quality of management, though felt management could be disrespectful to clients and staff.
