ABOUT PATHWAY SOCIETY INC.

Established in 1964, Pathway Society Inc. is a nonprofit that provides a full continuum of behavioral health services, including treatment for substance abuse. Programming is designed for adults and includes residential treatment, transitional living, intensive outpatient treatment, and standard outpatient treatment. Additionally, there is a six-bed detox unit for those who require medical attention before beginning their recovery.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment begins with a comprehensive intake assessment conducted by a trained counselor. Clients who require detox typically remain in treatment for up to seven days. Once stabilized, they may move on to the residential program. Duration of treatment varies, but most clients remain on-site for up to 45 days. During this time, residents participate in an individualized program consisting of one-on-one counseling, process groups, and educational sessions.

For those seeking a step-down treatment or a less time-intensive program, Pathway Society offers outpatient treatment at a variety of intensities. Based on their needs, clients may choose from multiple tracks that specialize in issues including alcohol dependence, relapse prevention, and mental health issues.

Program graduates and individuals who have completed substance abuse treatment at other facilities may apply for Pathway Society’s transitional housing program. The apartment-style residences allow newly sober individuals to acclimate to independent living in a safe, sober, and supportive environment.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the facility’s website, treatment is conducted by licensed counselors. Additionally, the center collaborates with physicians, mental health practitioners, and therapists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Pathway Society maintains two residences — Pathway House, a co-ed, 65-bed facility, and Mariposa Lodge a 34-bed housing unit for women. Few details regarding the facility’s accommodations and amenities are available, but photos published online depict a homelike environment with outdoor space for communal gatherings.

The four alumni surveyed by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility’s accommodations an average rating of 4.25 out of five stars. The same group gave the center’s cleanliness an average rating of 3.5 stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At time of writing there have been four alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com. One anonymous alum gave the facility four out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, accommodations & amenities, and meals & nutrition. Although she gave high overall ratings, she did not give high marks for metrics concerning the facility’s quality of treatment. She disagreed that the facility was adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems in addition to substance use disorders; and that the admissions and discharge procedures were swift, organized, and clearly explained. She also wrote that there are good counselors at the facility, but not enough of them.

Contrastingly, alum J.C. awarded five-star ratings nearly across the board for treatment effectiveness, accommodations & amenities, holistic offerings, family participation, and affordability. She reported to Best-rehabs.com, “i learned so much there that u can have fun being clean and sober the conslers and staff were great.” She noted that she could not think of any facility weaknesses.

Another alum indicated that she chose Pathway Society because it “was the only all women facility with state funding.” She gave a mediocre score when asked to rank overall treatment effectiveness, and left little other feedback.

The three reviewers on Google to date expressed dissatisfaction with this facility, generating an average rating of two stars.[1] The four-star reviewer left no feedback. One of the two one-star reviewers wrote, “The staff are incompetent.”

In contrast, the only reviewer on YellowPages.com rated the facility five stars, and had nothing but positive commentary about the treatment and staff.[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

To date, Best-rehabs.com has received feedback from three loved ones, the parent of a former client, the sibling of a former client, and an extended family member. The parent reported that their child “didn’t stay sober.” When polled about the effectiveness of the treatment their child received, this parent gave the lowest possible score.

The sibling gave overall low rankings as well, with one star for holistic offerings, two stars for variety of counseling options, and three stars for accommodations. This loved one did grant family participation five stars, but expressed concern with the facility’s admission and discharge procedures, noting, “My sister was admitted on a Wednesday evening and was allowed to just walk out on Thursday morning.”

In contrast, the extended family member reported to Best-rehabs.com that their loved one received aftercare following the program, and that Pathway Society was “Very” active in helping to arrange that aftercare. This family member also expressed satisfaction with the level of family participation, writing, “Sunday was family day and sonetimes during the week they had a movie night witb your significant other.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

The sole former staff member surveyed by Best-rehabs.com to date was an addiction counselor employed by Pathway Society for over 10 years. This individual felt that the credentials and experience of the medical staff and the addiction treatment staff were quite high, but that the overall quality of the executive management was quite low.

This former employee listed as a core concern: “Very limited individual counseling,” further adding, “Mental Health was a high priority, addiction rehabilitation at the bottom.”

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, Pathway Society accepts both insurance and self-pay. Individuals who are unable to pay for treatment may apply for financial assistance through The Santa Clara Valley Department of Alcohol and Drug Services.
