Pax House

Pax House Altadena California

Pax House utilizes the evidence-based therapeutic technique known as Motivational Interviewing (MI). MI is an approach that is non-judgmental, non-confrontational, and non-adversarial. The aim is to increase an individual’s awareness of the potential impact of their actions and behaviors, helping them envision a better future and find the motivation to achieve it. Through this approach, individuals are able to change their sense of what is possible for their lives by fully grasping the potential gains that can come from making positive changes.

Pax House works closely with each participant to access the critical hope and motivation needed to change specific behaviors or life circumstances that are not in line with their renewed vision for their own lives.

ABOUT PAX HOUSE

Nestled in the picturesque Pasadena foothills of Altadena, California, Pax House is a residential treatment facility designed to assist individuals aged 18 and older who are struggling with substance abuse disorders. The facility specializes in dual diagnosis and often begins client treatment with detoxification. They also offer outpatient services and sober living as step-down or less intensive treatment options.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Pax House utilizes evidence-based and holistic approaches to treatment. The program is heavily grounded in the 12-Steps, motivational interviewing (MI), and individual counseling. Additionally, education and process groups, legal support, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychoeducational therapy, and family therapy may be utilized to support clients’ treatment journey. Residents are also encouraged to develop a fitness plan, which may include off-campus gym sessions or yoga classes at the facility. Treatment is further complemented by therapeutic activities such as meditation, hiking, and art and music therapy.

Clients may choose to undergo residential treatment for 30, 60, or 90 days. This intensive form of treatment involves a highly structured schedule and 24-hour supervision. Outpatient treatment is available for clients transitioning back into their communities or those seeking a less intensive form of rehabilitation. Sober living, relapse prevention, aftercare, and an alumni program are offered to support continued recovery.

During their treatment, clients have the opportunity to participate in the facility’s vocational program, which covers the cost of tuition, books, and supplies, making it possible for individuals to pursue higher education while receiving recovery services.

A single anonymous alumnus review received by Best-rehabs.com expressed a mostly positive experience. The reviewer had a positive view of the staff and gave a five out of five-star rating for treatment effectiveness, meals and nutrition, and family participation. However, they noted that the facility heavily relies on the 12-step faith-based model and offers limited treatment options outside of this approach.

Other online reviews are predominantly positive, though there were a couple of negative experiences shared by alumni. One individual on Yelp claimed that they were targeted for not going to the gym when they were physically unable to walk, while another on Google criticized the facility for staff changes, food quality, and cleanliness. The majority of reviews, however, expressed satisfaction with the program, with many alumni stating that they were made to feel like family and praising the staff for saving their lives.

Pax House Reviews

Pax house gave me the foundational recovery tools I needed to step out into the world as sober woman. I know have over 8 years of sobriety and owe so much of that to the open arms of Pax House.Highly recommend this beautiful place.
Only wonderful things to say about everything PAX.
Pax House holds a very special place in my heart, and I am forever grateful for saving my life. After many relapses and attempts at getting clean and sober, I ended up at Pax House with little hope. But, with the help of the amazing staff, and services they have to offer, I found hope and a new purpose in life. I had been to many treatment centers before, but this place had that special something, which did it for me. The house is beautiful and comfortable, the staff is amazing, the food is good, and all the groups and services they have to offer were great. I really liked that they take you out to meetings every night, and to the gym every day as well. Lots to do, including beach days, bowling, hiking on the weekends, and going to the movies. Recovery has to be fun too! Love this place!
Although, I received sobriety, for the time I was there at pax house. I would like to say there is no medical professional on staff. I saw psychiatrist once. Staff is treating patients with a call into a doctor on call., Pax is a warm, comforting environment. However, there should be someone else, other than previous addicts to attend to patients withdrawing.
Very good staff, one gentleman who does yoga, breathing and has a really unique and beneficial approach to treatment. The beds in the main house are super comfortable. The food is plentiful, good and nutritious. The lower men's house needs updating including new beds and carpet. They really pretty heavily on the 12 step faith based model and don't offer much treatment outside of that approach. The program director is a super kind soul and I did get the feeling that they genuinely care. They seem to have a good community going on of employees and alumni.
