St. Joseph Hospital – Behavioral Health Services

ABOUT ST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL – BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES

Located in Orange, Calif., adjacent to Anaheim, the Behavioral Health Services facility at St. Joseph’s Hospital provides a comprehensive range of treatment options for adults struggling with substance abuse, primary psychiatric and mood disorders, and co-occurring disorders. Through inpatient (IP), partial hospitalization (PHP), and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), clients may receive support for physical, psychological, and spiritual wellness. The facility also offers medically supervised detoxification onsite in the inpatient unit, known as the Rush Center. Special treatment tracks are available for dual diagnosis, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, and postpartum depression. St. Joseph is a Catholic faith-based healthcare provider.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Admission to outpatient services follows a brief interview, and patients requiring inpatient treatment undergo medical and psychosocial evaluations. After detox and stabilization, unless the patient needs more restrictive, 24-7 psychiatric support, treatment for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders generally takes place in a 32-hour per week PHP or 15-hour per week IOP. The latter is typically utilized as a step-down program, as clients progress in recovery.

The goal of St. Joseph’s behavioral health services is to assist patients in understanding and coping with their substance dependence and psychiatric conditions. Although specific therapeutic modalities are not listed on the facility’s website, individual, group, and family therapy, as well as medication management are mentioned. Group sessions cover topics such as relationships, codependency, emotion management, and self-esteem. An aftercare program is available, offering ongoing support groups.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni surveyed by Best-rehabs.com provided opposing opinions on most facility features reviewed, including the effectiveness of treatment. However, both mentioned distance from home and family as a drawback.

One alum gave low ratings to metrics measuring the availability of holistic options for treatment, admissions and discharge procedures, and affordability, stating that there was not enough attention given to patient needs. Conversely, the other alum reported “great customer service” and provided high ratings for each of the elements mentioned, as well as the level of staff training and experience.

Secondary review sites such as Google and Yelp did not focus on behavioral health services specifically, but ratings of the general hospital were fairly strong. St. Joseph averaged a rating of 3.5 out of five stars across 191 Yelp reviews, which ranged from reports of unprofessionalism to praise for kind, knowledgeable, and helpful staff members. Several mentioned long wait times.[1] Likewise, 145 Google reviews averaged a 3.8-star rating.[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Behavioral health services received overall positive feedback from the three loved ones polled by Best-rehabs.com. They provided four- and five-out-of-five-star ratings to metrics measuring opportunities for family participation and staff experience, training, and support. One client’s sibling wrote: “The staff there was very friendly and encouraged my brother to make healthy choices.”

Holistic offerings received the lowest ratings from all three.

FINANCING

The hospital accepts more than 75 HMO and PPO insurance plans, as well as Medicaid and Medicare. They also offer a 45% self-pay discount and financial assistance for qualifying individuals.

They have a lot of freedom like being able to get snacks from fridge at non mealtimes. For those approved, they go for a walk outside of hospital. Family therapy sessions were available.
