ABOUT SUMMIT MALIBU TREATMENT CENTER
Summit Malibu, located in a gated Malibu, Calif., community, offers medically supervised detox along with short- and long-term luxury residential rehab for adults struggling with addiction and dual diagnosis. The facility bills is located in a Spanish villa situated on five acres of private land.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
All clients begin with the short-term residential program, the Primary Care Program, which lasts 28 days and focuses on detox, where necessary, as well as stabilization. An optional Extended Care program adds 60 or 90 days, or more for those who require further treatment.
Summit Malibu follows the disease concept of addiction. The center’s treatment programs are built around the core values of individualized treatment and plenty of one-on-one therapy – each client receives more than 80 hours of individual treatment a month. The 12-Steps do not form an integral part of treatment, but clients may attend meetings as an optional extra should they choose, as well as SMART Recovery meetings.
Programs draw from a range of evidence-based practices including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), biofeedback, and alpha stim — in which a small electric current is pulsed across the head to relieve depression, anxiety, insomnia, and other symptoms. Clients also participate in relapse prevention training, life skills and communication training, and education about the nature of addiction. A family program includes education and brief strategic family therapy.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
According to the facility’s website, several staff members are in recovery themselves. The center also has affiliations to four physicians. The clinical director is a licensed clinical psychologist, and the center also employs marriage and family therapists.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The center accommodates 14 clients at a time and their pets, where appropriate. Residents live in private or semi-private suites with either ocean or canyon views, and can enjoy amenities including a spa, a swimming pool with views of the Pacific, and a fitness area with exercise equipment. Meals are prepared by an on-site chef and served on a patio overlooking the ocean, and the chef can accommodate a range of dietary requirements.
The amenities include a lap pool, jacuzzi, scheduling and transportation for all off-site appointments and bocce ball among others. Holistic offerings include yoga, spirituality sessions, boxing, massage, acupuncture, equine therapy and sound therapy.
