The Canyon Treatment Center

ABOUT THE CANYON TREATMENT CENTER

One of three California-based treatment centers operated by Foundations Recovery Network, a leader in providing integrated treatment for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders, The Canyon Treatment Center in Malibu offers a full continuum of deluxe treatment services that begin with detox and continue through aftercare.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Residential treatment at The Canyon is highly structured and incorporates a mix of individual, group, and family therapy. Clients move through four stages of treatment, each coming with new privileges and challenges.

The 12-Steps serve as the program’s foundation, however, other modalities are integrated as well. These include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and various alternative and holistic options, such as equine therapy, adventure therapy, yoga, and massage.

The center also has a distinctly spiritual approach. Among its “sacred spaces” are the Meditation Dome, in which the Dalai Lama has meditated, the Labyrinth Prayer Walk, and the Therapeutic Sweat Lodge.

The Canyon’s treatment offerings are numerous. In addition to the residential program, clients can utilize extended care, sober living, family workshops, and alumni programming. Outpatient care is offered at a separate facility in Santa Monica.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Canyon’s treatment team is led by a licensed clinical social worker with a doctorate in human development. The staff includes clinical psychologists, nurses, consulting psychiatrists, master’s level therapists, and consulting internists. The primary therapist-to-client ratio is 1:4, according to the facility’s website.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility calls its secluded retreat “Peace Park,” where there are 120 naturally wooded acres and stunning views of the Santa Monica Mountains.

The Canyon maintains gender-separate residences, but each are equally luxurious. Both sleep up to 16 residents at a time in shared and well-appointed bedrooms. Amenities include a full fitness center and pool. The Canyon’s Cordon Bleu-trained chef uses pesticide and antibiotic-free products and seasonal produce to create healthy, gourmet meals.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Eight alumni reviews sourced by Best-rehabs.com to date are mostly positive. Michael’s one-star review is an exception, as he brings up medication mismanagement and lack of treatment for co-occurring disorders. He wrote: “They mixed up drug tests of mine with another patient and threatened and pressured me to stay another month. One of the two reasons I went to the Canyon was for treatment of anxiety. There was no treatment offered whatsoever.” Additionally, Robert noted that he met his wife at the center. “The staff tried to do everything to keep us apart…The staff treated me horribly once they found out.”

Other alumni reviews submitted to Best-rehabs.com praised everything from the treatment approach to the facility itself. C.M. described it as the “best experience of my life,” adding: “The team of doctors, psychologists, nurses, and counselors I worked with healed me and taught me the skills I had always needed.” Alum K.B. echoed this sentiment, writing: “It is a beautiful location! I can’t say enough about the facility and the staff. Top notch in every category!”

An anonymous alum agreed that the facility’s treatment was highly effective, but noted that its stellar care came at a significant cost. They wrote: “If you have the funds, one of the best.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

At the time of this writing, Best-rehabs.com has received feedback from two loved ones of former clients. Both gave five out of five stars for family participation and nutrition, though they disagreed in other areas. An anonymous reviewer gave two stars for affordability and just three for treatment effectiveness, holistic options, and counseling options while reviewer M.U. gave higher ratings in these categories.

“Extensive one on one counseling; informative family weekend/visits; high quality/healthy meals were all strengths, but price is incredibly high,” the anonymous alum said. M.U. added, “Very supportive of patient and family. Gave tools to work on healthy life styles with an emphasis on continued aftercare.”

FINANCING

The Canyon does not publish its rates, but survey data collected by Best-rehabs.com suggest that treatment is costly. Some insurance plans are accepted.

To answer the question below, YES, I attended the Canyons for 4 hours. In previous phone conversations, I said that I could NOT afford $60,000 for 30 days...IT WAS CLEAR THAT THEY WANTED MY MONEY. I asked about a SINGLE ROOM at that price I was OMISED A SINGLE ROOM. IT NEVER HAPPENED. They said that they could put a screen between the two beds - RIDICULOUS. They called in two people to convince me to stay. One said that he could lower the $40,000. I was told they had a pool where one can swim laps. TOTALLY NOT TRUE. I was told that they have a great chef. TRUE. BUT ONE WOULD HAVE TO MAKE ALL HIS/HER BREAKFASTS AND LUNCHES. Then they called my wife on her cell to convince me to stay. NO WAY. She drove 2 hours back to pick me up - and we went home - thank God. I had given them $350 as a downpayment. I was told that I would an email confirmation within 72 hours, I called again - SAME PROMISE. I called again and was told that it would come from someone else. PLEASE ... PLEASE /// DO NOT GET RIPPED OFF !!!
I stayed at The Canyon for 45 days about a year ago. I am proud to say that I am writing this review sober. The Canyon will always be a part of who I am today. The staff there from the RCs to the physicians are among the best and most caring that I have encountered. Yes, it is very expensive. So is an addiction. Mine was alcohol and it was trying to kill me. Very nice and comfortable accommodations. Wonderful food and great people. My therapist saved my life. Thanks! Love you WMR
