Bayshore Retreat

Bayshore Retreat Destin Florida

What you will find at Bayshore is a large home on a bayou with a resident heron on the dock. Your eyes might linger on the original artwork on the walls as you relax in the den reading a book. Your taste buds might even thank you for the fresh crab cakes with a lemon buerre blanc, wilted spinach, and mashed potatoes. You might finally get a complete night’s rest on the extra long pillowtop mattress in between the 300+ thread count sheets. Being only one of just six people at a time might allow you to be heard AND allow you to listen. You just might even find you again.

ABOUT BAYSHORE RETREAT

Nestled on Florida’s panhandle in the town of Destin, Bayshore Retreat provides non-medical detox, residential care, and aftercare services to adult men and women struggling with a chemical dependency. The organization expresses pride in providing a non-12-step path to recovery.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To gain admittance, individuals partake in a free, comprehensive initial assessment to determine their drug abuse history, mentality, and physicality. Treatment is holistic in nature, targeting all aspects of the person.

During their 30-day stay, clients engage in group and individual therapy, paired with physical exercise and sauna therapy to rid toxins and heal the mind, body, and spirit. Though 12-Steps is not required, there are daily Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings available, and clients may participate in any type of spiritual activity that suits them, including religious services, meditation, or yoga. Residents also may take advantage of deep tissue massages and nutrition education.

Activities are scheduled for the entire day from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Clients develop coping skills, relapse prevention skills, communication skills, healthy relationships, and other life skills both during and after treatment. Individualized aftercare plans are developed for each client and may include referrals to community groups, employment aid, and continued counseling.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The clinical staff at Bayshore Retreat includes a medical director, clinical director, and consulting psychiatrist. There also is a master’s level mental health counselor, dietitian, yoga instructor, life coach, and group facilitators. The staff to client ratio is 3:1 and many staff are experiencing their own recovery.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

This exclusive and upscale facility only admits six clients at a time. Residents stay in either private or shared rooms with private baths and flat screen color TVs and may take advantage of the home-like and cozy common areas. Gourmet meals are prepared on-site.

A true waterfront location, residents enjoy a dock to the bayou as well as weekend outings to movies, golf, deep sea fishing, sailing, and more.

  • Bayshore Retreat Reviews

I had a totally wonderful experience at Bayshore Retreat. The owners and staff are honest, caring, and know what they are doing. Unlike other centers, individual therapy is offered at a minimum of 2 times/week and as often as needed. The counselor is on-site and extremely knowledgeable on the topic of addiction and all the baggage that goes with it. Everyone at Bayshore treated me with respect and dignity. I was just a person with a problem. I came away armed with the strength needed to fight my alcohol problem. At Bayshore, they treat the mind, body, and the spirit. Now, I really feel at peace with myself and my place in the world. Bayshore really is a RETREAT!!! I almost forgot to give kudos to the personal chef. The food was delicious and healthy.

  • I was a client at Bayshore Retreat and I must say the program was way more than I imagined possible. The staff are amazing and very caring. With there being only 6 clients at a time max there is always someone available to help with big or small questions/concerns. The counseling and daily groups are very important to recovery and are very well ran. The meals are simply amazing!
I promised myself that if I was able to maintain sobriety for a year, I would reflect with perspective on my recovery experience at Bayshore. Currently, I'm active in a 12 Step program and we tell our story in 3 parts. What it was like, what happened, and what we are like now. I was a functioning alcoholic with 30+ years as a manager in a Fortune 50 (not 500) company. The announcement came out that the facility was closing and I was part of a strategic move to cut costs. In other words, I, as well as my wife, was unemployed. I crashed and burned. I drank myself into the hospital with pancreas and kidney failure and my diabetes was out if control. I could not see a way out. Fortunately, or by the grace of God, my wife contacted Bayshore and they had a spot for me. I really don't remember the first couple of days I was there other than I felt safe, I was upright, and I was taking nourishment, . The staff was extremely understanding, caring and professional. I was given a few 24 hours to come back to reality before the process of recovery began. The program focused on mind, body and spirit. The physical healing part of the program was exceptional and diverse. Daily trips to the gym, yoga, swimming, sauna, massage, paddleboarding, kayaking were all part of the Bayshore facilities program. Acupuncture, hypnosis, and chiropractic were available as options outside of Bayshore. The food was absolutely exceptional. The on site chef (a real chef not a cook) could and should write a book. He also catered to my needs as a diabetic. As most people who need rehab find out, the mind is the real issue. Bayshore's on site staff is outstanding. In addition to on site counseling, there are weekly visits from numerous disciplines. A psychiatrist to explain the chemical functionings of the brain. Clear explanations of the effects of dopamine, serotonin, gabba, nerve synapse actions and why you feel the way you do on a medical level. Members of AA and past drug addictions now with degrees in counseling provide insight into recovery and the 12 Step process. Spirituality and the beauty of finding a Higher Power from a published counselor and a degreed counselor in childhood trauma provide a different viewpoint of recovery. All of these wonderful people made themselves available for individual discussion and counseling upon request. Finally, the program has a structured study backed by Hazelden that takes you through the process of how you became you and what you can do to return to a contributing member of the world. It identifies your character strengths and weaknesses and provides the tools necessary to work through issues. The daily workbook provides a process for you to set goals and formulate a plan of action so that you will be successful upon returning to life. It's been nearly a year and I can happily say I'm still trudging down the path of recovery. I have a host of new friends and a clear picture of where I want to be. I've survived job loss, my wife's cancer, and the loss of my dream home without ever thinking about picking up a drink. Bayshore gave me the foundation and the skillset to stay in recovery. It's a pleasure and an honor to recognize the Bayshore team as an integral part of my recovery. I will be forever grateful to all of them for helping save my life. Thanks to 3 people in particular for having the vision to provide such a wonderful place to recover. I honestly don't know how you do it on a day to day basis. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you ever need anything, you've got my number

  • This retreat is absolutely amazing. They take a holistic approach to bringing sobriety to your everyday lifestyle. The counselors and staff are absolutely amazing and truly care for their clients. I really appreciated that there are so few clients (6 at a time) so they can focus on each client individually. The chef is amazing and provides delicious nutritional meals to prepare you for your day of healthy living. They also provide exceptional education as well as down time for you to focus on yourself. It is priced fairly (you could pay the same thing down the street and get eggs out of a carton and slop Sundays). The management is great at working with you and making sure you are on track for a healthy and sober lifestyle when you head home.
It saddens me to write this, but this place has such great potential, which I feel is being negatively effected by management and some of the employees... Some of the employees were extremely unprofessional, rude and disrespected me continually. I am sickened by the behavior of these so called professionals and would not currently recommended this place. The accommodations, program and cuisine is exceptional, but I feel some staff members are not fit for this type of caring, loving and safe environment.
