ABOUT CAP OF DOWNERS GROVE

Founded in 1976, the Center for Addictive Problems (CAP) provides treatment for individuals struggling with substance abuse, specializing in opiate and heroin addiction, at three separate locations. The facility located in Downers Grove, Ill., offers outpatient counseling and medication management for adults (clients 17 and younger require consent from a guardian). Other services provided by the clinic include vaccinations, STI education, TB testing, and EKG testing.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Following a pre-admission screening, clients participate in a comprehensive, three-hour intake assessment. During this appointment, a nurse checks the individual’s vital signs and completes necessary lab work before a physician assesses withdrawal symptoms and determines the most appropriate dosing amounts of methadone or buprenorphine. It is one of the 17.3% of Illinois facilities to offer methadone maintenance.

Initially, most clients visit the clinic six days a week for dosing, counseling, and educational services. After 90 days, the number of weekly visits may be reduced. If a client has a goal to be medication-free, staff provide a treatment plan that safely manages withdrawal from medication while preventing relapse.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the center’s website, the treatment team includes physicians experienced in addiction medicine, nurses, and specially trained counselors.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

A.S., the sole alum polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing, provided CAP with a negative review, submitting just one out of five stars for the program’s treatment effectiveness. This respondent reported being treated like “a number not an individual.” They also found the facility’s counseling to be subpar and remained on methadone for seven years despite wanting to live medication-free. “I had become everything I didn’t want to be when I became a patient at CAP,” A.S. wrote.

The 20 reviewers on Google shared a different perspective, providing an average rating of 3.4 out of five stars.[1] Reviewers commented on the ease of treatment and the high-quality staff. “The nurses and counselors here are nice but don’t put up with bull, for our own good,” Sarah, a representative reviewer, wrote. Others credited the facility for their recovery. “I can actually live a normal life on a MMP such as this,” alum Jason added.

Multiple Google reviewers agreed that treatment was lengthy which some found frustrating and expensive. “Methadone is a maintenance medication so plan on giving CAP money for a long time,” Tray wrote in an otherwise positive four-star review. Offering a one-star rating, alum Colt added: “They try too keep people hooked on the methadone for profit.. They could care less for anybody actually addiction,”

This latter view was similar to the one expressed by Y.S., one of the three reviewers on Yelp.[2] He submitted two out of five stars, referring to the center as a “legal drug dealer.” “My counselors used to fight me when I wanted a methadone decrease, and if they had their way, they’d have you on maintenance for life,” he wrote. Sarah, another Yelp reviewer, was pleased with the center’s service and the staff. “The nurses were never late, you were always treated with respect, and you were always in and out quickly,” she wrote along with a five star rating.

FINANCING

CAP’s methadone maintenance program charges $60 per week after a $60 intake fee. For buprenorphine maintenance, the facility charges a $350 intake fee and $200 per month. CAP does not accept insurance but notes that some insurance policies will reimburse clients for a portion of their treatment fees.
