ABOUT PARKWOOD BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SYSTEM IN OLIVE BRANCH, MS
Parkwood Behavioral Health System, located in Olive Branch, Miss. offers residential and outpatient treatment to children, adolescents, and adults struggling with mental health and/or substance abuse. The organization opened its doors in 1987 and is located seven miles outside of Memphis, Tennessee.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
To be admitted, clients may call Parkwood Behavioral Health System 24 hours a day to schedule a free assessment. During the initial assessment, clients work with a mental health professional to determine what level of treatment will be most appropriate for them. The facility offers a wide range of specialized treatment programs, including partial hospitalization, an intensive outpatient program (IOP), and residential treatment. Residential treatment is offered exclusively to adolescents ages 12 to 17. The facility is able to treat clients with a.
Parkwood’s treatment program follows the 12-Step method and seeks to be “educational, insightful, and experiential.” Throughout treatment, clients receive individual, group, and family therapy as well as on-site Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous group meetings and medical education on the disease of addiction. The facility offers unique treatments and therapy including art therapy, pet therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), yoga, and a relaxation group.
Families are encouraged to participate in the treatment program to educate themselves on their loved one’s goals and needs, and are able to speak with Parkwood counselors to work through their feelings. The facility also offers educational opportunities for children receiving treatment through Park Academy, a fully accredited, on-campus school.
The treatment team at Parkwood Behavioral Health System includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, certified addiction counselors, and recreational therapists.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
There is currently limited information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings. However, photos on the Parkwood Behavioral Health System website show shared dorm-style bedrooms, shared hospital-style bedrooms, a gymnasium, several classrooms, and modern bathrooms. The facility does not allow clients to bring any electronics such as cell phones or computers.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
At time of writing there have been two alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com. One alum gave the facility poor ratings and the other gave it excellent ratings. However, both reviewers said they would recommend Parkwood Behavioral Health System to a friend or family member seeking treatment. The first reviewer said he did not believe treatment was worth the cost, and rated cleanliness, staff support, and both individual and group counseling poorly. However, he did not relapse after treatment and said the facility provided him with the proper tools to recover.
The second reviewer gave the facility excellent ratings overall, particularly in the categories the first alum had expressed were negative. Although he relapsed after treatment, he said he was able to recover independently with what he had learned at Parkwood. The alum added the following additional commentary: “It only works if you want it to. You have to help yourself with their help.”

Overall they gave the facility mixed reviews, and only two of the five reviewers said they would recommend Parkwood Behavioral Health System to others. The anonymous loved ones gave the facility an average of only 1.8 stars for affordability and 2.8 stars for cleanliness. Parkwood’s highest ratings were for family participation, which received an average of 3.4 stars three out of five stars. Reviewers gave the facility three out of five stars for staff experience and three stars for counseling options.
When asked to comment on facility strengths, several loved ones scoffed at the question and indicated they could not think of any strengths. However, others mentioned that the facility had good food and and support staff, and that communication was a strength. When asked to comment on facility weaknesses, two reviewers said Parkwood is expensive, and two more said “everything” is a weakness. One loved one wrote, “Avoid at all cost,” but another wrote, “This facility offers spiritual healing as well as compassionate and caring counselors.”
WHAT STAFF SAY
At the time of this writing there was one staff member of Parkwood Behavioral Health System polled by Best-rehabs.com. The staff member said she would strongly recommend the facility to others, and gave the facility five out of five stars for every category. When asked about strengths of the facility, she wrote, “Great client care.” She did not share any facility weaknesses, and added, “The staff is caring and makes sure that the proper care is received.”
