Located in the the N.J. city of Freehold, CentraState Medical Center is a private health organization that offers psychiatric services to people of all ages. The facility provides inpatient and outpatient programs to individuals seeking treatment for mental health and behavioral problems. Across New Jersey, while 88 percent of facilities offer outpatient treatment, only 3.2 percent offer inpatient (hospital) treatment.


According to CentraState Medical Center’s website, the emergency mental health services provides immediate assessments, support, and referrals. After an initial evaluation, a staff member will work with the individual to create a treatment plan. The inpatient program at CentraState Medical Center is for people 18 years old and older.

The center’s goal for inpatient residents is to stabilize the client and improve their coping skills, socialization, self-care, and daily functioning. CentraState Medical Center’s website indicates the facility uses electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) on an inpatient and outpatient basis. ECT is used to treat those suffering from major depression, repeated suicide thoughts, mania, and some types of schizophrenia.


According to the center’s website, the facility is staffed by a full-time medical doctor, a nursing director, psychiatrists, a PhD psychologist, therapists, psychiatric nurses, a substance abuse counselor, social workers, and activity therapists.


There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, however, its website indicates it is a “secure unit that is fully staffed and equipped.” The center also has a 24-hour emergency crisis hotline, which addresses anxiety, depression, substance abuse, domestic violence, and chronic mental health issues. When a person calls the hotline, a member of the treatment staff will listen to the concerns and offer suggestions.


The sole alum to submit a survey to at the time this time gave mixed review, rating the center three out of five stars. The client wrote: “…felt like my case was not as severe as the other individuals there and I probably would have done better in an environment that catered specifically to depression / anxiety.” Despite giving low ratings for treatment effectiveness and level of counseling, this alum had high opinions about the facility, including its cleanliness and accommodations and holistic offerings, giving five stars across each of those metrics.

The 62 clients who left Google Reviews[1] for CentraState Medical Center had mixed experiences, offering 2.7 stars on Google. Those who gave the highest rating left no commentary; however, the greatest complaint from those who offered low ratings seemed to be about the staff. However, the reviews are for the entire center, not just psychiatric services.


There is currently no information provided on the facility’s website regarding its costs. The hospital at-large makes specific mention about accepting Blue Cross and Aetna insurances, however, it also lists taking some form of payment from most major insurances.
