Located minutes from Asheville, N.C., situated in the Appalachian Mountains, Next Step Recovery provides supportive sober living and outpatient programs for men. The treatment center is typically for men who have recently been discharged from a residential program and utilize the facility as an aftercare service. Next Step Recovery provides a highly-structured regimen of programming to promote sustainable recovery.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
According to the facility’s website, clients must be 30-days clean prior to admission to participate in treatment. All applicants are subject to a background screening and have a phone interview. Next Step Recovery does not accept individuals on Suboxone or other medication-assisted therapy regimens.
Eligible applicants must commit to a minimum of 90 days of residence. The average length of stay is between six and nine months. However, clients may remain for up to 18 months.
A blend of independent living and substance abuse treatment, Next Step Recovery offers a range of ongoing services while clients transition back into the community. Residents receive weekly individual case management services, relapse prevention education, random drug and alcohol screenings, life skills training, and 12-step support. The program also offers employment and job search assistance.
All residents also must obtain employment, volunteer, or attend school, as well as attend at least three12-step meetings per week.
A unique component is the outdoor adventure program, which is mandatory for the first month and optional thereafter. Promoting substance-free recreation, such as hiking, mountain biking, camping, rafting, outdoor sports, and fishing. Once a resident feels ready to re-enter the community, Next Step Recovery provides reintegration assistance and ongoing recovery support.

The facility’s website notes Next Step Recovery is led by a licensed professional counselor, and the facility employs a team of on-site certified substance abuse counselors, house and case managers, job coordinators, and peer specialists.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Next Step Recovery’s website indicates the treatment center offers a home-like environment in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Although the program is highly structured and residents have access to 24/7 recovery support, individuals enjoy a level of independence and are required to perform household chores.
The housing complex has a capacity of 28 residents and the apartments (one-, two-, and three-bedroom units) are fully furnished with well-appointed living rooms and laundry facilities. Residents also have access to a state-of-the-art fitness facility and apartment community pool.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Of the 18 alumni surveyed by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing, 13 provided positive feedback and five left negative reviews.
The alumni who left negative feedback complained about the price of treatment, crowded living quarters, and a rude staff.
“Ridiculously expensive. I would not enter this facility again if they paid me. Very negative and condescending staff. The staff at Next step recovery does not speak to you, they talk down to you,” an alum wrote in a representative review.
The alumni who provided positive reviews praised the center’s staff, the nice accommodations, and effective treatment programs.
“They help in the recovery process from multiple vantage points. I was introduced to the 12 steps, mindfulness meditation, practical life skills, and evidence-based therapeutic practices,” an alum wrote in a representative review. “The staff have a wealth of knowledge and I can tell that they really care about each individual.”
However, J.J., the only alum to give a somewhat mixed review gave one out of five stars for treatment effectiveness. “Eh it was ok but Im still an addict,” he wrote.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
The lone loved one polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided negative feedback. The loved one gave two out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, and four stars for accommodations and amenities along with meals and nutrition.
“There are some really good people that work there and are dedicated but many of these places operate as a business as the person in charge of Next Step did the same. It is easy to make a nice looking web-site that makes you feel good but you really need to dig deeper,” a parent wrote.
FINANCING
The cost at Next Step Recovery is $8,225 for 90 days, including entrance fees. Although the facility does not accept insurance, financial aid may be available to qualified applicants. It also provides links to organizations that offer recovery-based behavioral healthcare lending.
