ABOUT SEA MAR CHC – TACOMA BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTER
Part of Sea Mar CHC, a community-based health and human organization of Washington state, Tacoma Behavioral Health Center provides outpatient-based treatment programs and services for children, adolescents, and adults struggling with chemical dependency, psychiatric disorders, and co-occurring issues. Medical detoxification is not available on-site. Individuals in need of detoxification and inpatient care may be referred to the Tacoma Treatment Center, also in Tacoma, Wash. There is also a specialized program for parents in recovery at a nearby facility.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Utilizing evidence-based practices, Tacoma Behavioral Health Center’s programming consists of individual and group psychotherapy, as well as psychoeducation classes. Upon intake, clients undergo psychiatric medication assessments to determine an appropriate level of care.
According to three alumni surveyed by Best-rehabs.com, Sea Mar Tacoma’s chemical dependency programs incorporate 12-step principles and practices into treatment. According to the program’s website, loved ones are invited to participate in treatment through family support groups or family/marital counseling. If necessary, the facility provides medication management to address any psychiatric issues that may be contributing to addictive behaviors. Case management services are available for adults and children.
The Parenting in Recovery (PIR) program provides treatment for parenting men or women and pregnant women. Evidence-based approaches include motivational interviewing, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and family systemic intervention. Child care is included in the program. Intensive outpatient (IOP), outpatient, and aftercare tracks are available.

Tacoma Behavioral Health Center employs a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, mental health therapists, chemical dependency counselors, and registered nurse practitioners.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Four out of five former alumni surveyed by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing praised Tacoma Behavioral Health Center’s treatment. Four alumni gave four and five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness and the staff’s level of training and experience. However, they rated its holistic options an average of 1.75 stars, and five alumni gave family participation only 2.4 stars.
Alumni praised the number of staff, accommodations, and treatment program, though one wrote staff could be better educated and another that recovery principles needed more focus in treatment. One anonymous alum wrote: “Hard to get an appointment with any of the nurse practitioners. Counselors and therapists however are great, open availability and very helpful!”
Ten Google reviewers to date rated the facility an average 3.6 out of five stars, with two negative reviews, three mixed, and five positive.[1] In a representative review, alum Bonnie wrote: “I have been coming here for the last 4 months, the staff is caring and kind.” Reviewer Jenifer agreed: “great place great nurses and doctors.” However, Michael complained that “Counselors are always quiting, changing.”
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
Best-rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from loved ones of Tacoma Behavioral Health Center’s alumni, but on Google, Kim, the mother of a former client, gave the facility a four out of five-star rating. “They were very good with my adult schizophrenic son. I was very grateful to have very compassionate and professional,” she wrote.
