ABOUT CANAAN S.A.F.E. HOUSE
Located in Urbana, Ill., Canaan S.A.F.E. House (Substance Abuse Free Environment ) is a non-profit organization that offers 12-month Christ-centered, gender-specific residential substance abuse treatment for adult men and women. The facility was established to keep Urbana’s most vulnerable substance-addicted residents out of prison and help them to return to normal community life.
Medical detox is not available on-site for either sex, but the facility does offer a walk-in service (providing temporary relief for those in crisis) and referrals to local agencies and social service programs.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
According to the facility’s website, residents of S.A.F.E. House are held to tight daily schedules consisting of G.E.D classes and/or adult education, devotions, individual and group therapy, volunteer work projects, weekly worship, and personal-enrichment courses.
Classes taught at the center include family skills, violence prevention, communication skills, self-esteem, and self-development. The center also helps to fund legal and medical services for residents.
Residents who successfully complete the 12-month program are eligible for aftercare support to find and secure employment, housing, and healthy post-treatment routines.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
The facility’s website notes the organization was founded by a prominent pastor in the local Zion Canaan Baptist Church, and mentors and teachers are often selected from within the church community. There appears to be no trained medical or psychiatric staff employed by the facility.
