ABOUT PRESENCE HEALTH — HARBORVIEW RECOVERY CENTER
Overlooking Lake Michigan in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, Harborview Recovery Center offers medical detox, inpatient, and outpatient treatment for adult men and women struggling with addiction and dual diagnosis. The facility is a part of Presence Health, the largest Catholic healthcare system in Illinois, and is one of 25 (about 4 percent) of Illinois facilities that offer inpatient treatment.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Since Harborview is part of the Presence Health, it shares facilities with the network’s main Chicago location, Presence St. Joseph’s Hospital. This allows easy access to multifaceted care for those struggling with dual diagnosis of co-occurring disorders. Additionally, the hospital can also simultaneously treat The center particularly notes that treatment for cancer, diabetes, HIV, and liver disease during treatment.
Treatment at Harborview begins with a comprehensive intake session to determine the best course of action. The residential program provides 24-hour care, and is intended as a short-term measure only, before clients progress to outpatient care. Outpatient options include a partial hospitalization program (PHP) that meets for six hours each weekday and an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that meets three nights a week.
Treatment is evidence-based and holistic, aiming to treat each client’s mind, body, and spirit. The center provides cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), family therapy, trauma and resilience therapy, group spirituality sessions, peer mentoring, and educational groups on healthy living. The center also utilizes the 12 Steps. Additionally, as part of an optional holistic treatment approach, Harborview offers humor, art, and pet therapy.
When clients complete treatment, aftercare options consist of referrals as well as a weekly support group and a weekly alumni meeting. These services are largely based in Chicago. Additionally, the facility encourages that family members stay involved in the addiction treatment process, and participate in family meetings while in aftercare.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
The facility is staffed by a team of physicians, addictionologists, psychiatrists, nurses, certified alcohol and drug counselors, and licensed clinical social workers. Across the state of Illinois, 97 percent of facilities are accredited, licensed, or certified to treat substance abuse and mental health disorders. Moreover, one alum who submitted a review to Best-rehabs.com to date gave four out of five stars to the staff for its level of care.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The facility doesn’t list the specifics of accommodations, however, residents have access to yoga sessions and an on-site gym. The two alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com to date on the center’s accommodations and meals gave it four- and five-star ratings in each category, and the sole alum polled on the center’s cleanliness gave it five stars.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Of the two alumni reviews submitted to Best-rehabs.com to date, one was positive and the other was mixed. Both alumni rated the treatment highly. “Harborview Recovery Center at St Joseph’s saved my life and helped me get back on track through AA,” alum Robert wrote, giving the center five stars for its treatment effectiveness.
The second alum indicated that treatment had been effective and gave the center four stars for the overall quality of its individual and group counseling; however, their review indicated that the center’s extracurricular activities were lacking, giving the facility just two stars for its exercise, leisure, and holistic offerings.
At time of writing, there have been no secondary reviews for the Harborview Recovery Center in particular. However, on Google, Presence St. Joseph Hospital, Presence Health’s main Chicago location, received 3.6 out of five stars from 96 reviewers.
FINANCING
Financial information specific to the Harborview unit is not available, however Presence Health as a whole accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and numerous private insurance policies. One alum also indicated that the cost of the treatment was worth the money.
