Bowen Center

Bowen Center

Bowen Center is a nonprofit mental health care and substance abuse treatment organization with a dozen locations throughout northeast Indiana, including in Huntington and Columbia City. Clients include those struggling with ADHD, eating disorders, and an array of addictions such as gambling and drugs and alcohol. The Warsaw facility in Kosciusko County offers inpatient medical detoxification and stabilization services and outpatient treatment for adult men and women. Bowen Center corporate offices are in Warsaw, as well as a group home for chronically mentally ill clients.

Admission to the Warsaw inpatient unit involves a physical examination, psychiatric evaluation, and social history. Clients who have received a single or dual diagnosis of chemical dependency and mental health disorders usually remain on the unit until they transition to continued outpatient treatment or to a group home or another recommended program.

All levels of treatment incorporate individual and group counseling and are strength-based, trauma-informed, solution-focused, and time-efficient. An array of therapeutic modalities are employed, including the Matrix Model, Seeking Safety, Moral Reconation Therapy for clients in the criminal justice system, hypnosis, biofeedback, and workshops for anxiety and stress management.

An employee assistance program, social skills training, grief counseling, community education sessions, and special treatment for adolescents and women are also offered.

The inpatient and outpatient treatment teams are comprised of psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, licensed therapists, a licensed dietitian, and chemical dependency counselors, including several staff members with master’s and doctorate degrees.

The Warsaw facility offers residential pods that can accommodate different groups of clients. The facility also includes a spacious open-day room with natural lighting and a closed-off patio area.

The sole alum polled by to date gave the Warsaw facility mostly positive ratings. They rated the facility three out of five stars in holistic treatment offerings and exercise and leisure provisions, and four stars in counseling options and cleanliness. They cited the staff as a strength and food and exercise options as weaknesses.

One alum on to date rated the facility only two out of five stars, writing that staff “Doesn’t listen, typically doesn’t remember who you are from one appt. to the next and your questions go unanswered with ‘vague’ responses.”[1]

The two loved ones polled by to date indicated that they would recommend the facility to others. One rated the Warsaw facility a perfect five stars in every category measured, including cleanliness, affordability, and available counseling options.

Both anonymous loved ones left comments and ratings that identified the effectiveness of treatment and “the people” as program strengths. One described staff members as friendly, helpful, and caring. However, the other did note that long-term treatment and aftercare options needed improvement.

Bowen Center in Warsaw received 16 largely critical reviews on Glassdoor to date, who on average rated the facility 2.4 out of five stars.[2] Former and current employees generally indicated that they and their co-workers believed in the value of their work with clients. However, most also reported high turnover rates, a lack of training, and low pay. Fifteen Indeed reviews tended to concur with both concerns about training and positive opinions of fellow staff members and the organization’s mission.[3]

According to the facility’s website, financial assistance and charity care are available to clients who qualify. CiteHealth and HealthGrove both indicate that Medicaid is accepted.
