Harsha Behavioral Center, located in Terre Haute, Ind. offers residential treatment to children, adults, and seniors struggling with mental health and dual diagnosis. TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The facility’s program employs a number of treatment methods including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Recreation Therapy, Expressive Therapy, and mindfulness training. Admissions to Harsha Behavioral Center begins with a phone call. Harsha promises that clients and their families will know after the first phone call whether or not the client is able to be admitted immediately. Within 24 hours of reaching the facility, new clients will complete a physical exam, medical history, and mental status assessment. Most clients remain in treatment for one to two weeks.

Throughout treatment, clients may receive individual, family and group therapy, as well as inter-agency consultations, crisis intervention, discharge and referral planning, nutritional counseling, and 24-hour nursing care. Clients at Harsha Behavioral Center may receive medication as part of their stay. Families are included in the treatment program through treatment planning meetings, family seminars, multi-family group work, and educational opportunities. Harsha also offers unique treatment opportunities such as a music class, pet therapy, and a sensory room.

The clinical team at Harsha Behavioral Center includes child and adolescent psychiatrists, medical doctors, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, a family nurse practitioner, mental health technicians, and a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.

The facility offers 81 beds for male and female clients in a modern, hospital-like setting. Clients stay in shared bedrooms, and residential units at Harsha Behavioral Center are separated by age groups: children age 3-12, adolescents age 13-17, adults age 18-54 and geriatrics age 55 and older. The facility is equipped with a large classroom, recreation therapy room, and a cafeteria.

At the time of this writing there have been two friends or family members of clients polled by Best-rehabs.com. Both reviewers said they would recommend Harsha Behavioral Center to others. The anonymous loved one gave the facility four out of five stars for affordability, four and five stars for cleanliness, and three and four stars for exercise options. One reviewer agreed that there are many counseling options to choose from. Both reviewers agreed that the facility is adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems, and that facility staff are experienced and well-trained. When asked about strengths of the facility, the two loved ones commented on the counseling available at the facility, and said “they are good at what they do.” Neither reviewer mentioned any weaknesses when asked what Harsha Behavioral Center could do to improve. One loved one added, “If you feel that there is no hope or reason to live, this is the place for you.”

On the facility’s Facebook page, which it can manage, there is an overall rating of 3.9 out of five stars based on 67 total reviews.[1] Although most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, there are a handful of people who said they had negative experiences with Harsha Behavioral Center. Parent of a client K.M., who gave five stars, said she would highly recommend the facility. She wrote, “Harsha helped my 4 year old when no one else would. The staff is awesome and communicates with the parent frequently. They have a very clean and well maintained facility and do thier beat to help each and every person who comes through thier doors.” Another reviewer, D.B., did not agree with that viewpoint. He gave one star and wrote, “This is a very unsafe place! Most days they are understaffed which puts their patients and staff in harms way.”
