ABOUT HARBOR RECOVERY CENTER
Founded in 1966, Harbor Recovery Center (formerly Harbor House) in Fort Smith, Ark. is part of Harbor House, Inc. — a two-facility treatment provider that also operates a women’s facility called Gateway Recovery Center.
Harbor Recovery Center provides residential treatment for men struggling with substance abuse in Fort Smith, Ark. The facility also offers outpatient services, a six- to 12-week intensive outpatient program (IOP), and specialized services for those with co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or chronic pain. Detox services are not offered on-site.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Treatment at Harbor Recovery Center begins with a comprehensive evaluation. During testing, staff members analyze each client for a range of conditions including substance abuse symptoms, general health issues, and mental health issues. Special attention is placed on identifying signs of PTSD, depression, and anxiety in order to more appropriately address those complexities during treatment.
Harbor Recovery Center integrates 12-step principles, alternative practices, and evidence-based approaches during treatment. This is done using a mixture of hypnotherapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The facility has 30-, 60-, and 90-day residential programs.
In a typical week of residential care, men participate in at least six hours of interactive group counseling, and one or more hours of individual therapy. They also have at least five hours of recovery support groups (e.g. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), or SMART Recovery). Clients are also involved in up to 3 hours of physical activity to promote general health.
Special programs are provided for clients with PTSD to help recondition them. Reprocessing and Eye Movement Desensitization techniques are used to mitigate the effects of PTSD and other trauma-induced conditions. Hypnotherapy is also applied in specific cases to relieve symptoms.
After the residential program, if needed, clients can make arrangements to live at Cornerstone, the organization’s transitional living facility for men, where they can stay for up to two years. During this time, they can participate in the residential/work program which allows them to develop connections in the community.
