ABOUT MILLS HEALTH CENTER
Mills-Peninsula, a division of the Northern California-based Sutter Health Network, offers a continuum of services for those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. Programming for adults is offered out of the hospital’s San Mateo, Calif. location, and includes acute detox, residential treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, and relapse prevention support. The facility treats co-occurring disorders. Specialized programming for teens is also available.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
According to Mills-Peninsula’s website, staff members assist clients with completing the “First Step” of acceptance and choosing a temporary sponsor. Other program components include individual counseling, family counseling, group therapy, family education, stress management and assertiveness training, relapse prevention, and on-site recovery meetings.
Those in need of assisted detox can expect the process to take three to five days. From there, clients may opt for inpatient treatment, which is designed to stabilize individuals and prepare them for daily life and work. The residential program includes 45 hours of structured activity per week, and 4.5 hours of that may involve family members and significant others.
Many who graduate from residential care then enroll in Mills-Peninsula’s 12-week intensive outpatient program (IOP), which has a self-reported completion rate of 67 percent. This phase focuses on building addiction recovery skills and, like inpatient treatment, includes family member participation while allowing clients to maintain their professional and personal lives.
A weekly aftercare group for clients and loved ones is provided up to a year for no charge. Mills-Peninsula also offers programming tailored for painkiller addiction and a six-week relapse restabilization program for clients who’ve been sober for at least six months.
