ABOUT NORTHBOUND TREATMENT SERVICES – KIRKWOOD, MO
Northbound Treatment Services in downtown Kirkwood, Mo., a western suburb of St. Louis, offers outpatient care for substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. The program takes the form of a “family recovery program” assisting not only the individual faced with addiction, but their family as well.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Northbound Treatment Services views addiction as a disease and roots its holistic approach in the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and in group therapy. According to a 2015 profile of the facility, outpatient programming at Northbound St. Louis typically lasts 12 weeks and continues with a year of aftercare.
Service and treatment methods available at the Kirkwood facility include clinical evaluations, weekly family support groups and family therapy, recovery coaching, referrals to the organization’s residential treatment programs in California, ongoing aftercare support, and case management.
The center is also host to on-site 12-step meetings as it maintains an active role in the local self-help community.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
There is currently no information provided by the organization regarding its treatment staff, however, its website notes that staff work closely with referring specialists such as therapists, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and physicians.
Best-rehabs.com survey respondents also had what to share on the matter. While some described the staff at Northbound St. Louis as “weak” or lacking “backbone,” others reported having counselors and case managers who were “knowledgeable,” “caring,” “professional,” and “experienced.”
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
As briefly noted above, personal experiences of former Northbound St. Louis clients were very mixed; of the eight alumni reviews submitted to Best-rehabs.com to date, five were positive, three were not.
On the positive side, alumni of Northbound in St. Louis called it “an outstanding facility,” and described its staff as caring individuals both fully capable of connecting with clients and responding to their issues. “They saved my life, and I’m forever grateful for that,” wrote J.H., telling of the counselors: “They went above and beyond to help me out.” “They treat you with respect, tell you the truth, and help you map out a plan for the future,” commented R.D., yet another alum who shared details of a positive recovery experience at the center.
Much in contrast, two alumni had suspicion of certain staff members. “The counselors were nice but weak and bullied by the recruiter into doing things his way,” A.A. wrote, giving the center only one or two stars in most of the evaluated treatment metrics, like the staff support and the overall quality of counseling. And James found the place “shady” for having “deceptive” marketing practices.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
The two affiliated friends and family members reviewing Northbound St. Louis provided mixed feedback. In a critical report to Best-rehabs.com, reviewer J.G. advised that the organization “Get rid of the program director and get some counselors with more backbone and open mind toward alternative treatments.” J.G. also felt the organization overinsistent on its approach to treatment: “meet patient where they are at and don’t force AA on them.”
A working therapist in Florida, A.J., shared a drastically different picture of the rehab. “I have had several patients that have come from Northbound Treatment Services,” A.J. told Best-rehabs.com. “Each patient that I have had all described the quality service they received at Northbound.”
