ABOUT HIGH POINT REGIONAL UNC HEALTH CARE — ADDICTION SERVICES

The Behavioral Health department of High Point Regional Health (HPRH) in central North Carolina provides inpatient detoxification, psychiatric stabilization, and outpatient treatment services for individuals struggling with substance abuse, mental health disorders, and co-occurring disorders. It is one of only 26 hospitals to offer inpatient detox in NC. The general hospital, founded in 1990, is operated by UNC Health Care.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Approaching addiction as a disease, HPRH offers evaluations, medication-assisted treatment, and individual counseling as part of an individualized treatment plan. Psychiatric assessment is available at the emergency room at any time. Inpatient care is designed to quickly stabilize the patient and refer them to a less-intensive level of care.

Along with inpatient detoxification, the facility may utilize pharmacological intervention and ongoing medication management to stabilize patients struggling with a primary or co-occurring mental health concern. Stabilization services also help patients to learn coping skills and identify challenging circumstances related to substance abuse and/or mental health disorders.

Once stable, HPRH may encourage patients to “step-down” to its outpatient-based services, which may include counseling, educational classes, relapse prevention workshops, case management, and aftercare planning.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the facility’s website, psychiatric and substance use assessments are conducted by master’s level clinicians. The hospital also employs multiple psychiatrists.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Both of the loved ones polled by Best-rehabs.com gave High Point Regional three stars out of five for the overall effectiveness of treatment. In their comments, the respondents indicated that treatment wasn’t quite long enough to be truly effective.

“They try but just can’t keep them long. They only stay a few days. That’s really not long enough,” G.H. wrote. The other anonymous reviewer noted that HPRH was appropriate for emergencies only. The loved ones gave one- and two-star ratings for counseling options, opportunities for family involvement, and its holistic therapy offerings. “It’s just a hospital,” a loved one wrote. “No in-depth treatment but ok for emergency treatments”

  • Its just a hospital no in depth treatment but ok for emergency treatments. There needs to be more involvement with spouses before release and to have an out patient option after discharge.
