The Camp Recovery Center

The Camp Recovery Center Scotts Valley California

Located in the serenity of the Santa Cruz redwoods, The Camp Recovery Center offers highly structured treatment for adults and adolescents who are experiencing addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. The guiding principle here is “recovery means life.” The objective of this comprehensive, multi-modal treatment program is to assist clients in rediscovering the joys of a healthy lifestyle, free from the constraints of chemical dependency.

ABOUT THE CAMP RECOVERY CENTER

The Camp Recovery Center is situated on a 25-acre campus rich with redwood trees in northern California, with the cabins of residents overlooking the majestic trees. Since 1984, the center has been providing detox, residential, outpatient, and aftercare services to adults and adolescents. The main facility is located in Scotts Valley, Calif., with intensive outpatient (IOP) facilities in the surrounding area.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, admission to The Camp is determined on an individual basis, taking into account a client’s history, needs, and goals.

The Camp Recovery Center is capable of admitting individuals with co-occurring mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD. However, the treatment center is not equipped to provide care for more severe mental illnesses. Clients with co-occurring disorders are placed in separate programs and living quarters.

Treatment at The Camp takes a holistic approach. The program includes individual counseling as well as gender- and age-specific group counseling. Treatment also incorporates relapse prevention, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) groups, creative therapies, and active involvement in the 12-step program. While the 12-Steps are not a primary component of the approach at The Camp, they are still integrated into the program.

Other activities offered include yoga, acupuncture, and meditation, along with personal training and a variety of recreational sports and games.

Residents between the ages of 13 and 17 receive treatment at the Meadow Lodge. In addition to the therapies and activities mentioned above, adolescent residents have access to a fully accredited academic program.

Continuing care is provided through outpatient programs for both adolescents and adults, as well as an Alumni Association that organizes regular retreats and sober activities throughout the year.

  • The Camp was great for my daughter's recovery. The only issues were hassles with getting Optum to cover the treatment fully, and the Camp did not help that much; it took me more than a year to get reimbursed. The Camp is effective, but seemingly primarily an income-generating business.

  • This was one of the biggest scams I've ever experienced. My son went there, he was treated with total disdain and contemp. I had numerous conversation with the camp's councilors, They were almost all incompetent and clueless. My son broke a rule by having his iPod with him. Music can and is very rehabilitative. When they discovered his IPod, they literally kicked him out, put his belongings in a trash bag and dumped him at the local McDonalds. I kid you not. Please DO NOT take a loved one to this facility. They care about one thing, getting as much money from you as they can. They hurt my son much more than they helped, We later found a real rehab center, not an incompetent institution like the camp, and my son has been sober for three years. The state should close this terrible place down.
I attended The Camp Recovery Center around nine months ago, and was entered into the minors facility. It goes without saying that I had not been looking forward to this month fight for my sobriety. But, nonetheless, I knew I needed to get some help and acceptance. I wanted to be surrounded by people that understood me, and what I was going through. Although I found that I was surrounded by under qualified staff who pushed onto me what my problems were, without asking me the questions. It seemed as though the entire staff, more so the case managers, assumed every client was the same. And we are not. No two people, no matter the similar tendencies, are the same. I entered knowing I was not an addict or alcoholic, and same goes for a lot of the kids in there. But on a daily basis I was told that I am indeed an addict. Even so, I pushed away their ignorance and listened to what they said to me. I paid attention during the meetings and tried to take their advice. Though I felt like I was taking advice from a staff of five year old children. I have to say that I have never been so disrespected by such a large group of people trying to "help" me. I had multiple occasions in which I was pulled aside and told that I was incorrect when speaking about events in my life that they assumed to be tragic and have a lasting impact on myself. All in all the staff were incompetent baboons. Now for the healthy and nutritious meals I was promised, I was highly disappointed. I have never eaten so much uncooked, freezer TV dinners in my life. They had no other options for gluten free patients etc. except for a few bruised bananas here and there. I most likely ate a total of 130 pbj sandwiches. I will never look at peanut butter the same way. Oh but the Mexican cooks were so nice and gave me extra cookies all of the time, much love for them. So the food and staff were not to my liking, 90% of the patients coming in and out also agreed with me, but I could look past all of that. Despite the days I spent crying from the way I had been treated, or the nights I went to bed hungry, I was going to try and give The Camp the benefit of the doubt. But no, there was no way I could ever find this rehab facility to be helpful to anyone. Even down to the mailing system. I had tried to send out multiple letters to my family that I almost never saw, and was told the mail was taken out that day. I had to wait two weeks until the letter I had placed in the bin on day one, to be sent out. Okay, alright I don't want to make this place out to be a real life hell, because it wasn't. I know how strict other rehab facilities are, but I had expected for the 14,000 dollars spent for my month stay, I would have received a better experience. What I want others to know is that if you or a loved one needs help, search elsewhere. Because this place is like a low-budget Hollywood movie filled with random shots of trees and rocks, underpaid and under qualified actors, and it smells like feet.

  • I loved the Camp, I had to come off Alcohol, Opiates, Barbs and pot. The nurses are the best! I would recommend the Camp to anyone who is struggling. You might not dig it when your going through it but you will look back with nothing but good memories. Where else can you get acupuncture and yoga?

  • My partner spent time at The Camp 20 years ago. Yup, it's rehab. No way to make it a walk in the park. But that stay did turn his life around. He passed from liver disease 4 years ago, but he was clean and sober for a long time. The Camp didn't make this happen--he chose to make this happen--but The Camp pointed him in the right direction. Thank you.

  • My husband received recovery and made wonderful connections with people there. He has been sober almost ten years. I didn't stay there myself so i wouldn't know weaknesses I enjoyed the family group therapy session a lot. When I hear what others had been through our situation paled in comparison.

  • Nice location and good food. However, they do not push individuals to complete assignments or do inner work to support recovery once they leave. My boyfriend attended this facility and although he remained sober for the time that he was there, he did not leave the facility feeling he needed to change. He did not complete any of the assignments given to him and only met with his counselor twice the entire time he was there.
